Historia
Riverbend, Texas, doesn’t look like the crossroads of anywhere. But for four high school besties reuniting after twenty years, it’s a place to unpack a lot of baggage. Risa’s headed for divorce, Mary Nell’s been kicked to the curb by her leech of a boyfriend, and Haley was just blindsided by a shocking family secret. But restless army veteran Jessica Callaway, looking to plant roots, has an idea: corral her fellow former cheerleaders and renovate an abandoned church smack-dab in the middle of three dry counties into a bar.

objectively terrible
Revisado: 03-22-25
I enjoy Carolyn Brown's other work. This was insanely bad. There were no characters, just caricatures.
The plot was so thin as to be nonexistent. the biggest plot point seems to be cheerleading tryouts and whether the girls need to put out to make the squad. Yes, really.
Bizarrely unlikely things happen (a bare acquaintance of one of the 'caricatures' calls to talk about her failed marriage) for no reason. Teens raised in what's described to be a virtual religious cult are swear and dish out relationship advice, and also kind of find the cult appealing...
There is kind of an insta-romance with a couple of soldiers with ptsd feel feelings toward each other from a distance and worry about it.
Also most of the caricatures, except the ex-soldiers, are "put on payroll" at a bar/grill by the soldiers, and some quit otherwise well-paying jobs (teacher, accountant) to wait tables or cook and nobody is remotely worried about money.
It's not up to even the more weak of CB's previous books. I question whether she wrote it or let one of her great grandkids have a go as a middleschool project.

Not my fave IAD
Revisado: 03-19-25
There wasn't enough buulding of an actual relationship connection in this installment. I just didn't buy they were fated mates, or very good ones at any rate. But all the other IAD elements were there in spades.

objectively terrible
Revisado: 03-13-25
The main character is a psycho, who had no moral or professional compas. She kept doing absurd things, stumbling into coincidence after coincidence, breaking law after law, and halfway thru I was rooting for her to be the next victim. It's awful.

Historia
Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë created some of the greatest works of 19th-century English literature. How did these three young women, born into a humble parsonage on the isolated moors of Northern England, write such striking work? What influenced them? How did they get their stories out into the world? Why do their novels continue to grip readers to this day? These and other questions are what you will explore in The Brontës: Romantic Passion and Social Justice.

More "social justice" than reasonable
Revisado: 02-26-25
The factual, academic stuff on the Brontes is great. Less great is the Cathy-as-gender-fluid because she says "I AM Heathcliff" and Heathcliff is black, and Bertha is black, all the books being about slavery...
But it went entirely off the rails for me when it started confusing the lines between the Bronte's work and what's essentially fan fiction (Wide Sargasso Sea, etc).
Minor gripe was the authors dramatic reading style which was cringily over the top.
Love Great Courses, but this is a skip.

MMC narration is unbearably unappealing
Revisado: 02-10-25
I like the story and the FMC but the way the narrator voices the MMC makes him sound goofy, caricaturish, slapstick-y, Dick-Van -Dyke-in-Mary-Poppins and so romantically unappealing that it completely yanks you from the story. I recommend reading over listening so you can imagine a hero someone would pine over.

Holy Awful Narrators
Revisado: 02-09-25
These guys that narrate Bill.and Eric are...I can't think of a word that might adequately describe how terrible they are. The (loooong) timeline-setting explanations of events surrounding the stories are just weird. It's like listening to a laborious recap of a TV show you missed.
Just read the books and short stories and skip this.

Hasn't aged well
Revisado: 12-30-24
A number of the elements of the story were fine. the narrator was very slow and...not ideal. He doesn't differentiate characters enough and gives a disinterested feel.
While it's not terribly old, it felt so, sometimes cringeworthily. And speaking of cringe...the scene sort of juxtaposing oral sex with oysters and primordial ooze was incredibly awkward and weirdly juvenile.
I had been looking for a new series I could get into. In spite of some good elements, this won't be it.
