Historia
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

I listened twice. Fascinating political history. The context made the story of the controversial activist and the activist himself more engaging than the biblical Jesus. It explained for me the discrepancies of the gospels.

Clinically fascinating
Revisado: 05-27-24
Dr Franklin is a good storyteller. He covers stories of medical education as well as of unusual cases. He describes the decline in the practice of medicine over his forty year career, to the profit-driven depersonalization that existed at the time of his retirement.

Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Historia
For half a century, we have been trained to believe that our right brain hemisphere is our emotional brain, while our left brain houses our rational thinking. Now neuroscience shows that it's not that simple: In fact, our emotional limbic tissue is evenly divided between our two hemispheres. Consequently, each hemisphere has both an emotional brain and a thinking brain. In this groundbreaking new book, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor presents these four distinct modules of cells as four characters that make up who we are.

JBT expands her “stroke of insight into a useful simple schematic of neural functions into four quadrants. Recognition of which one is in the ascendant and using the information for self regulation is a formula for greater internal peace and better communication with others. Personally and lovingly told. The final chapters add more food for thought about how we got to our present condition and our choices about where we go from here.

Historia
Treasured by Buddhists of all traditions, The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. This text has been studied, practiced, and expounded upon in an unbroken tradition for centuries, first in India, and later in Tibet. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the Bodhisattvas - those who renounce the peace of individual enlightenment and vow to work for the liberation of all beings.

I cannot rate the “story.” The instructions in the work are timeless and thought provoking. I have been contrasting this version with the more poetic Stephen Batchelder translation which is not, as far as I know, available in audio format. Both present Shantideva’s luminous message.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.

True story about NW Alaskan culture and characters and native son, Teddy Kyle Smith. This production makes clear the social context in which Smith grew and which he left to follow his vision of Hollywood stardom. What happened when he returned to Alaska after pursuing the California dream is the drama that compels the listener. It left me with some thoughts about what constitutes ‘a jury of his peers.’

I read this book years ago and it had a profound impact on my thinking. It prepared me to take training in applied kinesiology both for service to others and for enhancement of my own life. Though I have not used it for calibration, it has been a useful guide. As to Dr. Hawkins’ explanation of attractor fields and their effect on mind and body, I have observed them to be true. Listening to the good doctor read his work made the experience more powerful...the power that is benign and healing. His message is consistent with principles of spiritual growth and enlightenment. Inspiring.
