Revisado: 10-11-19
I listen on the road for long trips. A friend loves this book. Lemme give you the story (spoilerish) Mom and Dad die, My brother and I move to California. Life is less than great. That....took..hours. No thanks, I like a story not a situation. Life is too short for this book.

An Overview of a Remarkable Partnership
Revisado: 08-06-18
There's a lot here and it's not necessarily in order. That said it is an autobiography of brothers who have a remarkable personal relationship and a very successful professional one. Throw in some insights into their personal lives separately and together and you get a refreshing and tantalizing look at filmmakers with a uncommon point of view. It has insights to family relations and movie business. It shows a kind of collaboration that most of us can only imagine. It's sometimes funny and occasionally overworked. If you are not a huge fan, this might - like it did me- send you to Netflix and Amazon to see the films and projects you have gained new insight into. Well worth reading.

“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born". An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy - abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued, and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape - but he can’t stop society’s collapse.

Relentlessly unpleasant
Revisado: 07-05-18
At 22% complete, I gave up. I dont mind a story with a slow build but this was just...not something I enjoy. And nothing in it leaves me wanting to know much more. May the good guys prevail and the innocent be saved....without me.

Snoozy Story Who's Finale Didn't come Fast Enough
Revisado: 12-25-16
I Liked this book. The beginning was so promising. And then the Author wrote literature. Then I stopped liking it. There's plot here, finding it among the descriptions and settings is a chore.. A story I'd love to know the end of, but the bridge between the beginning and the end (which I gave up on ever reaching at 70%) is too far. I wasted away and died in the sands.
Let me be a bit more specific. A story needs to advance and do so at a reasonable clip. This one just slogged on so long I gave up. Well written and performed but not really for me.
If you can read John Irving, you'll likely find this wonderful.

I want those 11 hours back please
Revisado: 10-28-14
I'm not sure what convinced me to listen to this. Maybe "...will break your heart and then make it soar..." maybe all those 4 and 5 star reviews. Six hours in I wasn't at all certain I've ever disliked a novel more. 10.5 hours in I was still waiting for it to get good. Then it ended. This book is remarkably well crafted and exquisitely performed. There is actually a hint of a plot but to suggest there's a story here- as far as I'm concerned-is giving it entirely too much credit. I think the narrators should get awards, they were wonderful. The author can sling phrases with the best of them, really, if rich evocative prose is what you like you'll love this. I like plot. I like a tale. This was about a ten minute tale told in 11 unending hours. Reminds me of "A Prayer for Owen Meany" only that book had 4 times the plot. I can see why many love this. I'm not in that group.

Revisado: 03-19-14
I suspect a knowledge of 80's culture and particularly video arcade games would be a determining factor as to who loves this book, but if you don't have such knowledge you'd still enjoy it. It's crazy fun. And Wil Wheaton is a revelation. He's terrific.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Rodgers and Hart. George and Ira Gershwin. Cole Porter. Lerner and Loewe. For most people who've grown up with and shared America's musical heritage, great songs open the floodgates to memories and feelings. Perhaps nowhere is this more profound than in the world of Broadway musicals, with their iconic melodies and memorable lyrics.Revisit the standards, originally written for the stage, that have both delighted and helped mend the broken hearts of Americans for decades.

Sing Along Worthwhile
Revisado: 12-07-13
I learned more about music theory than I ever expected. I learned more about Black-Face and minstrel shows than I would have thought possible. Without the rights, the lecturer was unable to present "all the classics" but he found remarkable ways through interviews and related content to present an astonishing amount of material. An exceptionally informative overview for both novice and fan.

Historia
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Don't hate me (updated)
Revisado: 12-12-12
Everyone-EVERYONE,. told me how wonderful this series is. I swear someday I'm going to make it all the way through, but I started it 4 separate times now...and I just never got into it. It's me, I'm sure it's me. I just find the first hour or 3 kind of uninteresting. I'm sure it's a character flaw on my part. The performance seems verygood but the story at least early on isn't my cup of tea - so to speak. Sometime when I have a long drive ahead of me I'll make myself try again. But for now, I'm not recommending it-purely out of ignorance.
Update:
I got on a train, The California Zephyr, and restarted this. I finished it on the last legs of the round trip AND having seen the TV series (Which i thoroughly enjoyed). With faces to go with names in my heads and a fair handle on the story I finished and it was good. It was surprisingly close to what was on TV. I have no motivation to read the rest of the series as The TV show was that true to the book.

A well realized world full of Ideas I never had
Revisado: 07-25-12
This is a terrific book. It got my undivided attention as soon as that fellow had a gun installed in his head. I love a book that let's the reader connect the dots without stating the relationship of said dots. The author does that incredibly well. Some of the best moments of this book are between the lines. I treasure those moments. This book went lots of places I never expected. I am really glad I read it.
