Historia
Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children.

Scary, gory and great!
Revisado: 05-07-24
The narrators characters voices, different, believable, changing of emotions. The time switching was confusing at first, but further in, it made sense.

Historia
In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved. Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave.

Historia
Gregory Maguire proves himself to be “one of contemporary fiction’s most assured myth-makers” (Kirkus Reviews) with Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, his ingenious and provocative retelling of the timeless Cinderella fairy tale. Perhaps best known for his dark and breathtaking Oz series The Wicked Years—including the novel Wicked, which inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical—Maguire is a master at upending the ordinary to help us see the familiar in a brilliant new light.

unusual
Revisado: 01-20-23
Not exactly what I expected, but not sure what I was expecting. Narrators voice was monotone and monotonous. The story was twisted, and rather boring, but I kept going. This is the 1st book by Maguire I have read, and questioning whether I will try another. But I absolutely loved the stageplay "Wicked". Will need to think about it...

Sad and beautiful
Revisado: 06-16-22
Love Judith Light as narrator! The story is emotionally charged, a sad time from history but touchingly told.
As beautiful an ending as possible for the time and place. A good read.

Good, but needs different narrator
Revisado: 05-10-22
As usual, enjoyed the story, but the narrator is terrible when vocalizing male voices. There would preferably be male and female readers for the various characters. This narrator has no problem with the female voices, but she sounds hoarse and monotonal with the male voices.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Narrator stinks
Revisado: 03-12-22
Loved the storyline. I always love archeology tales, especially the southwest US. Horrible narrator, she can't imitate any man's voice, and especially butchered Pendergast. Made a southern gentlemans drawl sound British., yuk, yuk, yuk! Even her womens voices are boring...Really need both men and women narrators to make it sound realistic.

Felt the mosquito sting
Revisado: 02-14-22
Sorta enjoyed the story, it was so-so, ho-hum. The narrators vocalization of the womens parts was the most irritating thing of all, especially Constance. But the giant mosquito was corny. Usually I can't wait til the next book, but this was disappointing.
