Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Impressively interwoven history, politics, and who-done-it.

This is excellent for getting a sense of the troubles in Northern Ireland. The scope of the narrative means that it is not ideally suited for a listen while doing laundry, chopping veggies, or washing dishes. One may forget a name from a prior chapter and want to flip back through the pages to find the thread. Nevertheless, this is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to this year.

Historia
For Michael Stirling, London's most infamous rake, after a lifetime of chasing women, of smiling slyly as they chased him, of allowing himself to be caught but never permitting his heart to become engaged, he took one look at Francesca Bridgerton and fell so fast and hard into love it was a wonder he managed to remain standing. Unfortunately for Michael, however, Francesca's surname was to remain Bridgerton for only a mere 36 hours longer.

I appreciated the more serious tenor of a widow finding her way back to the marriage market. However, this widow was too passive given her experiences and supposed self knowledge.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

The steady unfolding of the family story, unfolding in both directions, was highly satisfying.
Revisado: 01-01-25
I am sometimes frustrated by my inability to find stories of a male and female sibling who are each others life-long resources. This book was full of exactly that content. I listened and listened again! I if it was evening when a chapter was playing, the next day I might replay a chapter so I could more fully appreciate the complicated relationships and insights. Great writing. Great reading by Hanks.

World building and sprawling intrigue

I like the brisk paced plot and developing network of connections among various magical beings and familiars. The main character is disconnected from her body, as if sex happens elsewhere. Not as good as the prior installment but still a good listen.

Engaging storytelling that kept me tapping the “30 min” timer until past 3am.
Revisado: 08-12-24
Fast paced with plenty of who done it and what species is this!? The mystery of who is sucking on whom, who is cursing whom, and how do you know when you are being authentic is wedged in with romance and reflection of chilly winter nights. Excellent depiction of the college environment as experienced by professors and staff without getting bogged down in work relationships. One question, who disregards the Louboutin-destroying introduction to a wee familiar?

Historia
If my childhood taught me anything, it was to survive. Now I have a deep-rooted mistrust of people and a wall of steel and ice surrounding my heart. So, when Reed Ryan steps into my life, I know I need to keep him far away. He’s everything I grew up hating. Fighting. Fleeing. Devastatingly handsome, he looks like a drunken regret and has heartbreak written over every inch of his body - literally. He’s the quintessential bad boy...and he’s a cop. But the man is my undoing.

Blistering heat, troubling story
Revisado: 10-18-23
I welcome the frank sexual exploration and consent talk; however it is difficult to stay with the fantasy when the alpha is actually murdering people to facilitate illegal weapons trade. Voice actors are strong. Plot is well executed within the standard format.

Historia
Marko Sendoa isn't a beach man. He's not an Auckland man. He's a hard man. Born Basque, raised in the heart of New Zealand's Southern Alps, and bred on hard work, discipline, and getting the job done. It's not easy for a rugby flanker to make it to age 32 at the top of his game, but he's done it. Next year is the Rugby World Cup, and he'll do whatever it takes to be on the field in the black jersey when the anthems are sung. He doesn't need a kitten. He doesn't need a pregnant cousin. He definitely doesn't need a too-short, distractingly curvy, totally unimpressed Maori barista.

Romance and discovery amid real challenges
Revisado: 07-14-23
This may be one of my favorite Rosalind James books. The challenges of family obligations and professional demands meant that the romance developed for a couple trying to figure out how to manage family drama, self-care, creativity, and career goals. The internal reflections of the characters were also written and read in a style that was both approachable and immersive.
Ultimately this is a book that escapes a number of overworked problems in the romance genre—most especially the irritating portrayal of couples who are too young to (believably) have their emotional lives in order. Where romance novelists need to do better, Rosalind James has done better with this book. Further, the prose of this book, at least to the ear, told me that she had a more varied sentence structure than in some prior novels—that made for a better listen. Buy it now and listen.

It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress. Something blue. I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old". Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

Some funny and some not
Revisado: 08-19-22
The dialog is often funny, making parts of the book a thoroughly entertaining romp. There is some mystery in the female character’s backstory and in the male character too. Yet I find it difficult to get over the male character’s need for therapy.
