Yahtzee really shows how his writing has improved in this most recent DEDA novel. The mystery was great and the jokes landed. I will definitely be coming back to this book and this series.

Good Entry
Revisado: 10-20-21
This is a solid novel and new entry into the Threshold universe. Following one of the cult members was a nice touch. If theres one thing that felt a little off, it was that it felt a little predictable, but maybe thats just getting used to Clines's style. Not as good as The Fold or 14 but still solid. 4/5

Enjoyable Retread
Revisado: 03-12-21
So, I just finished rereading Eragon like a day ago. I had read the series as a teenager and young adult and had fond-ish memories of it and wanted to reread it to see how my outlook on it had changed 15 years down the line.
I know that it gets a lot of hate on some fantasy forums, but I found it rather enjoyable. I think the thing I liked most about it was how easy it was. Coming off of Malazan, it was a breathe of fresh air. It was really nice not having to work my brain trying to figure out what was happening. I could just plug in my headphones and enjoy my daily walk, and focus on other things if I felt like it. The prose were evocative in their simplicity, and I think the themes and plot reflect that.
Most interesting to me was how it made me reflect on what I thought when I was younger. It’s pretty clear that Eragon was written before the author had had a lot of life experience, (he was only like 18 when he finished) and you can see that in the way Eragon reacts to things in the book, such as lamenting why a god would let his uncle die. I can see why that might turn others off, but it reminded me of similar question that I had when I was that age as well, and remembered how much Eragon resonated with me at the time. Now that I’m more than double the age that I was when I read it, I can see that the world is more complicated and nuanced, and seeing those differences in outlook was kinda neat.
The narrator was excellent, and did a great job distinguishing characters with different voices.
I think that it jives with young adults and would recommend it to them or someone just dipping their toes into fantasy. It’s not as clever or well written as Harry Potter, and IMO that’s fine. It didn’t need to be to be worth my time. I think it was worth my credit.

Well written and well narrated
Revisado: 02-04-21
I wasn't quite sure if I was going to like this book when I picked it up, but I was immediately hooked by the first chapter. It details the first 2 years and campaign for his presidency. My favorite moments were the personal moments he shared about his life and family. That isn't to say the political chapters were not interesting, very far from it. In my opinion, this biography is among the greats along with Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel. Absolutely worth a credit.

Historia
Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache, and a pair of horns growing from his temples. At first Ig thought the horns were a hallucination, the product of a mind damaged by rage and grief. He had spent the last year in a lonely, private purgatory, following the death of his beloved, Merrin Williams, who was raped and murdered under inexplicable circumstances.

Tense and Exciting
Revisado: 10-21-20
Horns is a good novel. This could be considered more of a thriller than horror, but there certainly are horror elements. The pacing of the mystery is somewhat dampened by flashbacks, but the backstory is important and sheds light on the events and characters of the present. Joe Hill's prose is reminiscent of Stephen King's but still its own thing and makes for a easy, satisfying read. Absolutely worth a credit and very glad I picked this up. .

Historia
Is bourbon the quintessential American liquor? Bourbon is not just alcohol - the amber-colored drink is deeply ingrained in American culture and tangled in American history. From the early days of raw corn liquor to the myriad distilleries that have proliferated around the country today, bourbon is a symbol of the United States. This course traces bourbon's entire history, from the 1700s, with Irish, Scottish, and French settlers setting up stills and making distilled spirits in the New World, through today's booming resurgence.

An Excellent Follow Up to Dune
Revisado: 09-21-20
This picks up about 15 years after the events of Dune. Paul is now the emperor and dealing with the political ramifications of the first book. The narration was top notch as always, even though the narrators change a bit. I found the story a little hard to follow at points, but compelling nonetheless. The Tleilaxu sections were particularly interesting but I could have used a bit more exposition in some instances. Overall, I would say this is worth a credit, and a must read if you have picked up the original Dune.

Historia
In Of Dice and Men, David Ewalt recounts the development of Dungeons & Dragons from the game’s roots on the battlefields of ancient Europe, through the hysteria that linked it to satanic rituals and teen suicides, to its apotheosis as father of the modern video-game industry. As he chronicles the surprising history of the game’s origins (a history largely unknown even to hardcore players) and examines D&D’s profound impact, Ewalt weaves laser-sharp subculture analysis with his own present-day gaming experiences.

A fascinating history for fans
Revisado: 09-19-20
This book should appeal to both fans and newcomers interested in the source material. The first section is largely an explanation of what D&D is, which may be a bit redundant for hardcore fans. Once that is done though and the author gets into the history is when the book really took off for me. The sections where the author input takes from his D&D group were a little off putting at first but became less so as I realized they were there to illustrate a point. Definitely worth a credit for D&D players.

Historia
The story of poison is the story of power. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. Servants licked the royal family's spoons, tried on their underpants, and tested their chamber pots. Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions.

Revisado: 09-12-20
I suppose going into this I was expecting something a bit more informative in the way that poisons work. While this book does have some of that, it is primarily about famous poisonings and suspected poisonings. In this regard it was great. There was a lot of good detail and background on the historicity of poisons and I particularly enjoined the Russian chapter near the end of the book. Probably worth a credit if you are big into history, otherwise get it while it’s on sale.
