Should’ve hired a narrator; think he knows more than he knows

On the positive side, the author has good experience and insights to share. He’s been highly successful and has a track record most of us would like to have. The two problems which prevent me from being able to recommend this book are: The narration is hard to listen to…overly stiff, labored, and ‘read’. The author has had major success. That said, he has fallen into the trap of thinking that he knows more than he knows — that success on one path, makes him the authority on all things related. He speaks from his perspective, as is fair and expected, but he seems to not recognize that there are multiple paths to success. in places, this leads him to provide perspective that is in error. If you’re the kind of person who is going to take in multiple sources and decide for yourself, this book can be a resource that provides value. However, if you are the type of person who is looking for one book as the source of truth on the subject, do not make this the one.

A moment in time

The book captures a perspective that represents a moment in time. Since the book has been written, things have continued to evolve and change. Hopefully the author will update this book at some point. It does have some very good information if you are just starting out. It does not have much content that someone who is already in the space wouldn’t know. If you are a person who is new to this, please seek multiple perspectives. The author provides her perspective and articulates the rationale, but her perspective is not the only perspective on these topics.

Just ok

I could be wrong, but it feels like this was cobbled together from various random interviews that people had given over the years. It is certainly comprehensive, but to me, does not capture the magic somehow. Unless you are truly a diehard, you can find something else to spend 22 hours listen to  that will be more rewarding.

Enjoyably mediocre

If you think you might like this book, go ahead and get it. The author does a great job of covering the cultural context, history, and impact of classic rock. It will remind you of what it was like to hear and see all these bands for the first time. Predictably, the author offers up a number of assertions and opinions that you won’t agree with or see the same way. I came to appreciate it, because even that aspect kept me engaged. Lastly, terrible narration — what trying too hard sounds like.

You only need to be human

Incredible story — incredibly sad, maddening, and shocking. You don’t need to be a Britney fan or not a Britney fan, you only need to be human to be moved by this book.

Story — not so much of a true biography, more like one person’s editorial take on the band and culture. Heavy on the writer’s point of view. Almost zero incorporation of other perspectives.

Narration — a bit over the top in terms of the self indulgent tone.

Overall — there were some interesting aspects shared and things I didn’t know and/or hadn’t connected the dots on. If you’re a true fan, I would recommend it.

Virtually a eulogy. This explains everything. Matthew does a great job laying out his story and narrating. It’s almost like he knew he had to get his story on paper before what inevitably happened happened.

It takes a few minutes to really warm up, but once things get going, it is a tremendously articulate, relatable, and piercing story. The author is also the narrator, and the way that he reads it really brings it to life. Highly recommended.
