Historia
Newly engaged, Clive and Henrietta now begin the difficult task of meeting each other’s family. “Difficult” because Clive has neglected to tell Henrietta that he is in fact the heir to the Howard estate and fortune, and Henrietta has just discovered that her mother has been hiding secrets about her past as well. When Clive brings Henrietta to the family estate to meet his parents, they are less than enthused about his impoverished intended.

This is exhausting!
Revisado: 06-06-20
The first book in this series was okay but not great. I thought I'd give the series another chance, but the inner monologues and dialogs in this series are so badly written and exhausting to listen to. There's almost no action - it's all crowded out by inane ramblings by the two main characters. There's nothing here.

It's pronounced pæns nay, not pince nezz!
Revisado: 09-06-18
I love this series, but I am so tired of narrators who don't know how to pronounce words! Both this narrator and the previous one in the series need to read ahead and double-check words they don't know! If this one says pince nezz one more time in this book, instead of the proper pronunciation of pince-nez, I'm going to move on to another series.

I wish this had a different reader
Revisado: 03-25-18
Would you be willing to try another one of Soneela Nankani’s performances?
No. I think this is probably a beautiful novel, but it's been read like a children's story, full of unnecessary and inexplicable rises at the end of sentences and breathy explosions. I also don't understand why the narrative (non-dialog) portion is in an American accent. This is India in the 1920s. America doesn't enter into it. The British accents, while more appropriate, don't sound genuine. I wish this had been performed in a grownup voice. The main character sounds a bit ridiculous, like a kid, and it really distracts from the story. I'm several chapters in, and I just don't think I'll finish. I'll read it myself, and count this as an unfortunate purchase.

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

Promises much, doesn't deliver
Revisado: 07-16-16
What disappointed you about The Signature of All Things?
The beginning of the book was wonderful, but the author lost her way halfway through, and as I neared the end I kept waiting for the big reveal, which didn't come. Again, the first half was truly a story, but the second half was a confused mess of philosophy, boring and unsatisfying.
Would you ever listen to anything by Elizabeth Gilbert again?
Probably not.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Initially excitement, then confusion and boredom.
Any additional comments?
Juliet Stevenson is one of my favorite actresses and readers and, as always, she did a beautiful job with this book.

Learn the words!!!
Revisado: 12-22-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Silent in the Sanctuary to be better than the print version?
No, specifically because while the narrator is good overall, this is yet another book where words are painfully mispronounced. Please, please, please get the directors or producers to ensure that the readers know how to pronounce the words in the books they read. Nothing ruins a story more quickly than mangled language. There's just no excuse. If they review before the performance they can look up unfamiliar words on the Internet and even hear audio to check their pronounciation. It's easy.

Historia
In 1912 Ian Rutledge watched as a man was condemned to hang for the murders of elderly women. Rutledge helped gather the evidence that sent Ben Shaw to the gallows. And when justice was done, Rutledge closed the door on the case. But Shaw was not easily forgotten. Now, seven years later, that grim trial returns in the form of Ben Shaw's widow Nell, bringing Rutledge evidence she is convinced will prove her husband's innocence. It's a belief fraught with peril, threatening both Rutledge's professional stature and his faith in his judgment. But there is a darker reason for Rutledge's reluctance.

Does Ian Rutledge Ever Get a Grip?
Revisado: 11-25-14
Would you try another book from Charles Todd and/or Samuel Gillies?
I've listened to several, and after this one I'm done. Ian Rutledge is an emotional mess, not particularly brilliant as a detective, and the relentless misery he carries around with him is getting old. I get that he's suffering from shell shock and I don't want to seem heartless in my assessment of the character, but there's simply no change in him, from book to book. He isn't a satisfying character.
Would you ever listen to anything by Charles Todd again?
Probably not. In addition to my irritation with the Ian Rutledge character, I'm annoyed at the number of loose ends at the finish of each book. Things do not wrap up, and while that might seem like a creative approach, it's not what I look for in mysteries.
Have you listened to any of Samuel Gillies’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
He's wonderful. I would listen to him reading the phone book. I hope to hear more of his performances. He is a true professional.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Not as written, no.

Quincannon, meanwhile, is after a slippery housebreaker who targets the homes of wealthy residents.

Why can't readers look words up?
Revisado: 07-19-14
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No, I would have been better off reading it. Once again I found myself listening to readers who didn't know, and didn't bother to learn, how to pronounce words. What gives?
Would you be willing to try another book from Bill Pronzini and Marcia Muller ? Why or why not?
Possibly, although I wasn't thrilled with the Sherlock Holmes character. It seemed completely extraneous and also annoying. Sherlock Holmes, as written by A. C. Doyle, wasn't nearly so smarmy.
How could the performance have been better?
Look the words up!!! I'm so tired of paying for audio books read by people who don't know how to say the words on the page.
Was The Bughouse Affair worth the listening time?
No.
Any additional comments?
Audible needs to check these books before making them available for a fee. If the companies that produce them don't do a decent job, don't buy them and turn around and sell them to us. I don't think it's too much to ask that the performers know what they're doing and that the producers correct the performers when necessary. If not, what exactly are we paying for?

Historia
>In July of 1923, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple travels to Henley-on-Thames to visit her aunt and uncle, as well as to work on her latest writing assignment: covering the Henley Royal Regatta for an American magazine. Daisy plans a simple trip researching her article, enjoying the races, and, come the weekend, having a pleasant time with her fiancé, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard. But the tensions between the Ambrose team's coxswain, Horace Bott - a shopkeeper's son and scholarship student at Oxford - and rower Basil DeLancey - the younger son of an earl and all-around bounder - are constantly threatening to erupt into violence.

Narrator doesn't know how to pronounce the words!
Revisado: 07-06-14
Where does Dead in the Water rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The story is fun but the reading is not, so it ranks near the bottom.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Sort of. It's a cozy mystery, so it's not meant to be thrilling, I think.
Would you be willing to try another one of Mia Chiaromonte’s performances?
No. This is the second reading in this series by Mia Chiaromonte, and she mispronounces words all over the place. As I've said in past reviews, specifically about Mary Sarah Agliotta, when I pay for an audiobook, I expect the reader to know how to pronounce the words. Mia Chiaromonte thinks a "fit of pique" is a "fit of pickay." And that's just one instance. It's annoying enough to make me stop listening to this series, even though the stories are fun.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It pissed me off, because, as stated above, the reader didn't bother to check the pronounciation of the words before she did the reading, and the producer didn't do anything about it.
