E. H. Gombrich's world history, an international best seller now available in English for the first time, is a text dominated not by dates and facts but by the sweep of experience across the centuries, a guide to humanity's achievements, and an acute witness to its frailties.

Excellent!!

Different perspective--written by a German immigrant to England pre WWII WITH SOME UPDATES for perspective of time.
covers the whole history of the world from a time perspective. Somewhat Eurasian and north African focused but does touch Sub Sahara, the America's and Australia & Pacific Isles. Glad I read it.

Historia
In these 12 inspiring lectures, Professor Fears presents a well-balanced portrait of Churchill that does not whitewash his flaws. Yet he also draws on the most recent historical scholarship and material from Churchill's writings and speeches to make the case that Churchill belongs with Pericles of Athens and Abraham Lincoln as one of the greatest statesmen in the history of democracy.

Very Positive Potrayal of Churchill
Revisado: 12-12-22
I thought Churchill was a very great leader w some flaws and bad decisions. This lecture was super positive--like he was a 10 our of 10. I thought he was more like an 8, if you know what I mean . I'll do more research to get more balance.

I'm a fan of the Tartan Noir genre. this started off super dark, even for a fan of the genre. It eased up as the book moves along but it was heavy to start. glad I stuck with it.

f Fun Read
Revisado: 04-11-21
This was a fun read from a fun series. I liked how the story evolved though the ending came together in a bit of a rush. still, the likeable characters and good plot earn it a five star.
Note to Tartan Noir fans, of whom I big one: this series is lighter than that genre. still very enjoyable just no noir...

Historia
Detective Inspector Tony McLean is on the case when the search for a missing journalist uncovers the scene of a carefully staged murder. In a sealed chamber, deep in the heart of Gilmerton Cove, a mysterious network of caves and passages sprawling beneath Edinburgh, the body is discovered in a seemingly macabre ritual of purification. But McLean knew the dead man and can't shake off the suspicion that there is far more to this case than meets the eye.

Best Rebus Yet!!
Revisado: 10-19-20
And that's saying a lot.
amazing how Rankin can continue ro pull rabbits out of his hat getting the long retired Rebus deeply involved in investigations. even taking a lead role. and it seems believable. Rebus was a great detective in his day but the way Rankin keeps him in the game is true genius.
Kudos!

Good Tartan Noir, Heavy on the Noir
Revisado: 09-09-20
I enjoyed this one. I'm a big fan of the Tartan Noir genre. This was that, emphasis on the Noir part. a little on the heavy side. The Ian Rankin Rebus series is my favorite--I like the humor he injects.
This is a fun book and I'll follow up w/ the next in series--I guess that says a lot, right?
