I’m a fan of murder mystery stories and all that, and while this was definitely one of them, the fact that the story and the delivery of the performer was so utterly dry and monotonous made it extremely difficult to fall into.

The Ruins presents its cast as a typical slasher group, throwing them into an atmosphere that is new but comfortable to them. A group of college kids go on a trip to Cancun to have fun, relax, and get into all sorts of things. One of those things happens to be helping their tour guide find his brother who went to an archaeological dig site. Of course, this turns out to be a pretty bad idea, and where the story really kicks off.
There’s gore, thrills, and suspense, and while that’s really all you need in a good horror setting, the author (and narrator) goes out of their way to both fall into and deny tropes set by other mediums. I wasn’t sure who the “final girl” would be until it was blatantly obvious. I wasn’t sure if there would be a resolution until the last few lines. I wasn’t sure if the mystery would be something normal or something new until it was staring me in the face.
This boon keeps you guessing and on your toes the entire time. In moments of silence, I’m riveted. In moments of distress, I’m on edge. In moments of buildup, I’m eagerly waiting for more. This is one of the greatest horror stories I’ve ever witnessed, and I’ll be sure to follow the author more.

While the premise of this book is fine, with common tropes found throughout damn near every outlet of media, the constant fear of underwater peril is simply not found. A group of ragtag adventurers dive down to an impossibly deep portion of the ocean to rescue a man that none of them know, or at least none of them mention knowing. Of course things go wrong and then the final girl does final girl things. My issue is that it takes four and a half hours of a seven hour long horror novel to get anywhere remotely near horror-adjacent. Yes, the setup is fine, but the foreshadowing is vividly clear. Yes, the ocean is terrifying, but it’s also completely glossed over because they have fancy scuba suits. Yes, the main character has a love interest, but it’s very heavy-handed and feels fairly underdeveloped. As for the technical issues, three separate times the track skipped backwards by almost 15 minutes each, causing me to either struggle to find my place or simply re-listen to that portion again. Then considering how the entire track is listed as two chapters ahead, due to the fact that the forward and the prologue are each listed as chapters. And now for my key issue with this track: the narrator. If the author had not explicitly stated which character was speaking in almost every single conversation, I would’ve gotten lost before the prologue ended. The narrator is monotonous and bland, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had refused to put any sort of enunciation in their voice. The Russian woman, the Chinese man, the two Americans, and the British workers, all sound the same. It’s beyond infuriating, and it’s no wonder why this book took me so long to finish.

While the story of Dune is one that will forever stay in many minds, this particular telling unfortunately stays in my mind above many other auditory transcriptions. The story as a whole is incredible and deserving of the praise that it has received over the last 60 years. A thrilling tale of a young boy becoming a man is one often retold, but the world building that surrounds it is far more interestingly complex, it borders on illustration. I can imagine the world in my mind as the wonderful narrator carves a rainbow of words through the rough sands of Arrakis. This is almost completely overlooked by the inconstant voice work that is the rest of the book. Several times I have had to pause and rewind to ensure that the voice I was hearing was the same one I heard only moments before. The voice actors did an impeccable job, making what was once lines on a page feel like words overheard in a restricted room, but the inability to have the voice actors in every scene or chapter made me feel as if the heart was not in the great novel that is Dune. I’ve heard many a tale about this journey, and I was incredibly proud to have witnessed it, even if only once, and I will never be able to forget any part of my experience, both the unpleasant and the beautiful.

An amazing, excruciatingly long, book. Steven Weber is such a talent, a treasure, but King himself is the Eighth Wonder to me. No other author but Tolkien could compare to the painstaking detail and lengths that King goes to to deliver a wonderful experience that not only entraps the reader (listener) in the story, but also encases then in the horror surrounding it. IT is an amazing book, one of my personal favorites, a definite re-read, and an experience I suggest to all of my comrades.

I read these books as they came out when I was in high school. I loved every minute of them. Performance-wise, the crackling audio from the underwater segments really hurt my ears. It seemed to be much louder than any of the other segments of the reading. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed everything else.
