Reissue of a book - NOT a new title
Revisado: 04-12-25
Jodi Taylor is a magnificent writer, and Lucy Price-Lewis is a great narrator. I heartily recommend this title to FIRST-TIME readers. Sadly, it is a re-issue, not a new book. And Audible does not refund purchases, only credits. And there is no warning that this is not an original title. I now have duplicates of several Taylor books because I automatically bought or selected anything from the author. No more - I have to make sure it is not a prior book being re-released. Poor marketing choice by Jodi Taylor.

Historia
On a serene night in 1953, Sally Mason, a dedicated wife and mother of two, drives a twisting road on her way home from night school. Suddenly, a mysterious bluish-white light descends over the road. Terrified, Sally slams on the brakes. After a flash of bright light nearly blinds her, she passes out, awakening to the persistent knock of a police officer on her car window. When she sees the officer and remembers her frightening experience, she screams and faints, and is rushed to the hospital.

Poor Research and Bad Characterization
Revisado: 01-31-25
I had high hopes for this novel, only to be put off by 'time-setting' details that were wrong (The story takes place in 1953, years before some of the items mentioned to set the period even existed), then by unbelievable reactions. A cop taking time to shoo off passing cars and wonder about drugs and murder when he has a woman slumped over a steering wheel? The badly written exchange between police officers both in the car and later in higher-up offices was enough to make me finally give up. Hack writer with a decent narrator, writing off the top of her head instead of checking anything out. It's a shame, as the premise is good. But that is pretty much all this title has to offer.

Good Story with Occasional Flaws
Revisado: 01-11-25
A great premise and good narration is messed up a few times when the hero becomes a flaming queen. Stereotypically gay in certain spots, it is disappointing to see Jake become a caricature.

The Usual Great Listen
Revisado: 01-06-25
Though it only lasted a few hours, this new tale of St. Mary's was a welcome return to adventures with Max, Malcom, and others. I listened to it in the car, and then finished up sitting at my desk, unable to turn it off until the end. Zara Ran IS Max, though she also gets the other characters across as well. The St, Mary's stories are always a joy to listen to, and though this was not actually a Christmas story this year, it was my Xmas gift to myself. Fun story, great characters, and a fine performance. Though I recommend starting from the beginning of the series, rather than jumping into St. Mary's with this story.

Bad Story, Decent Narrator
Revisado: 09-05-24
I suffered through the first four chapters hoping this book would improve, but finally gave up. Painfully slow, with a fair narrator. Never found out what the 'friend' was, and don't care.

Along with Aahz, the green-scaled, purple-tongued demon and master magician summoned by Garkin, he sets out on a quest to get even. The road to vengeance is bound to prove rocky, however, because Skeeve can barely light a candle with his beginning magic, and Aahz has lost his own considerable magical abilities as a consequence of Garkin’s summoning spell.

GLEEP! (That's dragon for 'Great Read.)
Revisado: 03-30-23
This was a fun story with a really amazing narrator. It could have bene a full cast recording instead of one person. Noah LeVine mimicked Danny DeVito and Sean Connery so well you'd swear they were in on the audiobook. I'd read the book a long time ago, but had forgotten enough that this was almost a new experience. Asprin wrote wonderful stories, and Levine brings this one to life with great skill.

Simon is the best delivery boy that Mr Edwards’s restaurant has ever had. He’s on time every time, and he’s gotten nothing but good reviews. But he needs more money. His mother’s medical treatment won’t pay for itself, and his father is already working three jobs to try to make ends meet. But it might just be his lucky day: Mr. Edwards has another job for him. It’s more delivery work, but not the usual kind. You might even say that it’s out of this world. Oh well. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the pay is fantastic.

Good start, but starts to drag
Revisado: 12-26-22
I enjoyed the beginning of this novel - the premise was original, and pacing was good through the first half. I liked the narrator very much. He managed to convey characters of different age, sex, and species well, and was pleasant to listen to. However, the second half of the book lost momentum. Our delivery person starts asking silly questions (even noting they are silly) that slow things down and serve no real purpose. This leads to a resolution that feels contrived. I did finish the book but am uncertain if I will want to risk the next in the series.

Too Much Reliance on the St. Mary's Series
Revisado: 12-15-22
This book is great fun to listen to, but I was sorry to see so much of Taylor's other big series in this one. Character development and exposure of the three main characters of this series suffered a lot as Taylor spent a major portion of the book with Maxwell instead of Team Weird, (If you follow this series, then you know who I am talking about.) Zara Ramm does her usual impeccable job creating the different characters, and other than what I feel is too much use of Max, the story is full of the usual twists and turns that make her works fun. The confused focus on characters forced my only 4-star rating of any book in either series. Still a great listen!

When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

It Would Be Worth Covid to Get This Job!
Revisado: 12-15-22
A pizza Delivery Guy gets a job protecting Godzillas? The premise sounded dubious, but the Scalzi/Wheaten combination had always worked before. And it delivered in every aspect. Scalzi manages to provide humor, drama, and tension in a realistic manner despite the very odd circumstances. And Wil Wheaton provides perfect narration, presenting the individual characters as believable people. A great listen, highly recommended!
