Totally unique
Revisado: 05-04-25
I enjoyed the interconnected storylines. The author did a beautiful job of creating multiple fully formed characters that I empathized with. I’m admittedly a prude, so a smattering of intimate descriptions were fast-forward-fodder for me. Who knew beetle sex could make me blush?
All in all good fun. This should make for an engaging book club discussion!

Easy listen

Well, the virtual voice was better than I expected it to be, but I much prefer a live reader. This is definitely a hallmark romance. Not high art but nice, easy listening if you want some thing, a little romantic, not raunchy, not depressing.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A delight!
Revisado: 05-23-24
I loved the characters. I loved the way the “mystery“ was crafted in a unique format, having us know the answer, but waiting for the characters to discover it. A totally pleasurable read.
I personally don’t care for profanity or explicit content. For others wondering about this. There are perhaps 2 f-words, and a lot of the S-word. No explicit content , one instance of inferred intimacy.
Lovely book!

When Helene Hanff makes an innocent inquiry about the possibility of purchasing hard-to-find books through Marks and Co., Booksellers, she begins a 20-year love affair with Frank Doel, the proper English bookseller who answers her letter and sends along her first order in the fall of 1949. They are two very unlikely correspondents.

I loved this book. I listened to it on a car ride and the hours flew by! Watching this friendship develop gradually over the course of years through exchanged letters was so fulfilling and delightful. I wiped tears from my eyes at the close. This was an absolute treat ! Highly recommend if you enjoy wry wit, and are a rather sentimental sort.

I just loved it. Her descriptions
of the nonsensical way one’s mind can work when in mourning or crisis is so acute; it’s fresh, heartbreaking, unflinching and lovely all at once.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this delightful series. I’m a woman in my 50s and I know that these books are crafted with the intent to appeal to a youthful audience, which I’m sure they do! But i love them too. The narrator is absolutely phenomenal. Her command of voices and accents both male and female is top-notch. Highly recommend!

Lev Golinkin's memoir is the vivid, darkly comic, and poignant story of a young boy in the confusing and often chilling final decade of the Soviet Union. It's also the story of Lev Golinkin, the American man who finally confronts his buried past by returning to Austria and Eastern Europe to track down the strangers who made his escape possible…. and thank them.

Insightful and thought provoking
Revisado: 06-10-22
I am a very sensitive person, so truthfully sometimes I’m not able to read books that deal with sad or depressing topics because it affects my mood too much. (Judge me if you must) We read this book in my book club and I was a little nervous that it would be something difficult for me. I thought the author did a wonderful job of sharing all of the challenges and heartbreaks of their experience in a very factual clear way, which somehow did not bring me down. I don’t know how he did it but I’m thankful because I feel like I learned so much from this book and it will change the way I interact with the world and refugees in particular. I’m glad I read it!

Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Emma Thompson is perfection!
Revisado: 05-27-22
I remember years ago when I read a paper version of Emma. It was a very difficult read and I would have to read, and reread passages to gain their meaning. In this audible version, Emma Thompson’s narration communicates the meaning so flawlessly, clearly and dare I say… Effervescently? It’s remarkable! The weaving together of dramatization with narration was really effective. All of the actors did a fine job but Ms. Thompson stole the show. This was a completely delightful listen!

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.
