When World War 3 erupts on American soil, it is up to some less than likely heroes to band together and stand tall against any and all comers as a once proud nation is brought to her knees. Cowardly terrorist attacks and indifferent global communities have isolated America as she spirals into a desperate bid for survival.

Average
Revisado: 08-30-24
I’d say very average story. I never quite caught what happened to the cops wife and he never showed any remorse at all whatever it was. Besides that I suppose it had some decent humour between the cop and the Mike character if you like that sorta thing. The other part of the story was pretty typical Shtf stuff. Honestly I was bored and didn’t much care what happened at the end and had already made up my mind I wouldn’t be moving on to the next in series. Actually almost turned it off with an hour left just because I wasn’t interested in how it ended. Not that it was terrible! Maybe just because I’ve listened to so many in this genre that I’ve become bored of the same old story.

Terrible
Revisado: 05-02-24
Absolutely terrible! I cannot believe all the positive reviews on this book! Spoiler alert….. everyone’s a killer in this terrible story! Not only that but I came away feeling like the author lied to me! It’s one thing to write a mystery with a twist at the end but it’s another to write from the point of view of the main character who is the killer all while pretending they are trying to solve the crime. That’s dishonest writing, not a “twist” in the story!

Maybe my only five star review ever
Revisado: 11-16-22
This book is probably my only five star review I’ve ever given. Other reviews mentioned that although very similar to the movie there is enough difference and added info to make it worth the listen. I would agree. There are parts that are almost exactly as the movie portrayed it with subtle differences in the storyline or timeline. I guess I have it five stars because the story is so fascinating to me and it reminds me very much of my own families sorted past and tales of legend concerning my father and his brothers. Just an extremely interesting time period to be sure! Times are certainly not what they used to be! I’d recommend this book to anyone interested in those long ago days!

Good but could have been better
Revisado: 09-13-22
Pretty good writing and good narration but several things kinda bugged me. Close to half the book was setting things up and (maybe slight spoilers) the mystery leading up to her questioning her husbands acting weird and suspicious ended up being a big flop in my mind! I was expecting something more sinister or more depth to that part and it was kinda dumb. That and the fact that the “bad guy didn’t really have a lot to do with them finding themselves in peril till over halfway through the book. That and a bunch of small things like the fact that they could half easily bonked the guy in the head at some point verses plan to just run away and make their way through the woods with him chasing them or the fact that a young girl would just up and sneak out and make her way into the deep woods alone to look for them seemed silly! Oh and why would the rescue guys split up and go trampling around after she told them the woods were booby trapped and there was a killer roaming around instead of calling the police in asap? Just several things like that but it was otherwise a decent read and even tho I was disappointed at some points about the story it was pretty intense wondering what was going on the first half with her husband and his friends. So overall it was better than a lot of quick and easy reads I’ve run across on audible but not what I would call great.

Average l! Probably a story for YA
Revisado: 07-23-21
I would say it’s a juvenile writing and would be foe YA at best except for the naked and sex talk. Nothing graphic at all but not really sure why it’s thrown in when the writing seems a bit juvenile.
I love a good mountain man yarn tho and so would love to hear that the writing gets better and maybe a change of narrator also. This fella adds to the overall juvenile vibe of the entire book.
And the other reviews that mention how exhausting it was to hear that the word “mighty” was used A MIGHTY amount of times were spot on!!! It got to a ridiculous point very early in to be honest! I’m gonna see what the next book sounds like and if the narrator is the same and make my decision whether to carry on with the series but I’m doubtful and honestly feeling like I’ll probably be wasting another credit. A great idea would be to offer the entire series or maybe in blocks of three for one credit since I heard it’s a very long series. That might make it a really enticing deal! Otherwise I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna be able to stick with it if it doesn’t get majorly better!

Average again!
Revisado: 12-01-20
I didn’t like the main character Cody anyway! I wasn’t gonna bother with book two until I heard what happens and so couldn’t help myself. Probably just what Box had planned I guess but I was a bit optimistic that maybe a new main character would make it better... not really!
All that said I really don’t understand why someone would kill off their main character unless they’re trying to do some kinda George R. R. Martin thing where they kill everyone off!
I won’t bother with the next book! Just very mediocre as usual for Box!

Pretty good premise
Revisado: 11-15-20
I like the premise of the story. Definitely a different take on the tired emp storyline. Not sure if it was pulled off all that great tho to be honest. Can’t quite put my fingers on it but I just got to the point that I didn’t care much. Actually ran across another great sounding book and switched to it and then came back and finished this one. Which probably wasn’t fair to this book but it is what it is I guess. I think I will move on to the next book and give it a chance tho because I think it does have potential and the writing is not terrible.

Historia
Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand.

Another very average book by Box!
Revisado: 11-14-20
Seems everytime I make the mistake of listening to another C. J. Box book I. One away extremely disappointed! I crave an outdoor setting with a mystery, suspense and adventure so I tend to return to Box because his books always sound great but NEVER do they come through in the end!
I find them mostly boring with an “easy listening” kinda feel to them where the characters usually are not very well fleshed out and typically boring. This one in particular didn’t do anything for me listening to an alcoholic trying to change trope but the biggest thing is that I want outdoors and knowledge and character driven plots. I want experienced outdoorsmen instead of the main character stumbling around and simply “willing” his way to save the day. Throw a quirky character in there and make at least somebody appear to be a solid woodsman or cowboy or whatever!
Apparently Box has spent a lot of time traveling the countryside according to him but from listening to his books he comes off to me as having no real world experience in the wilderness or on horseback or any of the other things he lays claim to. Just another disappointment for me! I want a true horseman or woodsman to read about, not another run of the mill cop stumbling through the woods!!!!!! Watch the movie “Wind River” and write about THAT guy in a series and it will be EPIC!

Should have been part of the first book!
Revisado: 09-20-20
Not sure why this is seperate from the actual book and I’m pretty irritated that someone would try to get a credit for a two hour story. The only reason I purchased it for the $4 and not waste a credit was so I wouldn’t miss any of the story. But my guess after listening to it is that it probably wouldn’t have mattered. I bet you anything the first book quickly rehashes the entire story at its beginning so I’m just perplexed as to what is going on! I had chosen to read the first book after stumbling across it and seeing that it had all five star reviews accept for one and it appeared that people absolutely loved it! Now I’m thinking it must have been family members or friends helping the author out because this two hour prequel was not that good. I’d say a bit juvenile in the writing but it did flow fairly well I guess if not a bit rushed actually. I’m going to go ahead with book one because it sounded extremely good AND I’ve already spent a credit on it and the second book as well but I’m a little doubtful at this point. My gut tells me that I’m going to be of the opinion that this entire series should be for one credit so as to actually give someone their money’s worth but I hope I’m wrong and end up pleasantly surprised.

Finished this one and I can hardly remember what it’s about. I guess the story progressed a few days or something.... there was a fire or something.... totally forgettable and getting very monotonous! As I said the last how many every other is now reviews on this story, I’m gonna continue to see what happens but it beginning to be against my better judgement!
