Great story!
Revisado: 01-19-25
I've always enjoyed this story. The evolution of humanity to Godhood/advanced being is a hopeful and inspiring path. Also encouraging for the human race in my opinion. I'd like to think there is some truth to that path of evolution and destiny. Especially since this path emphasizes the person and not the technology of the world. The development of the body/person is the key to evolution and godhood/advanced powerful being. Not technology. Also, the humanity, if you will, of the sex drive/ drive to procreate being present and operative at all levels of humanity reaffirms for me the emphasis on the person as key to evolution. Not what one can build and use outside of their body i.e. technology. I truly enjoy this quartet of stories. I can hardly wait for the rest to be released. Finally, my one quibble is with some of the virtual voice's pronunciation of some of the names/proper nouns of the characters, cities, and worlds. Down through the years I have always had different pronunciations in my mind. She/it uses long vowels in places I always used short vowels. Like Estraaazi rather than Estrawzi for the pronunciation and actual spelling of Estrazi. Virtual voice maybe technically correct for when one uses the long vowel, But I'll chalk it up to having a different accent from me. Haha But all in all not bad virtual voice at all.

Not The Firefly I'm familiar with!
Revisado: 12-13-24
I disliked that the main male characters were unrecognizable. They all became over emotional, unintelligent, insecure, and/or wounded or inept. The crew although they might disagree with Mal they respect him. He is clever and finds a way to win or at least survive. Not in this story! The author basically made Zoe the captian. She twice attacked and then defied her captain. Where was her famous loyalty to Mal? (They went through a war together. ) Who btw was correct. She was wrong and if they had left the planet the way Zoe wanted and attacked her captain to try to achieve Anara would be dead. But no consequence for or apology from Zoe to Mal. They are both battle hardened experienced soldiers. So why is Mal basically losing all his fights and acting like a moron/meathead. That's not the Mal from the TV series or Movie. This was a book to highlight the women of the team and diminish the men! Not good. The thing I really liked about the show and the movie was that everyone in the crew got to shine and contribute!! One sex/gender wasn't made to look stupid just so the other one could look better. The essence of what I mean is expressed by River remembering something Zoe said "If you're in a situation where you need to get something done think of what Mal would do and do the opposite". This shows a complete lack of regard for him as a leader, strategist, and captain. Mal could take risks, be daring, and courageous sometimes to the edge of foolishness, but he was smart and resourceful and didn't need Zoe to tell him what to do or fight his battles for him. This book is not the Firefly of which I am familiar.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

I'm scratching my head- Disappointing Ending
Revisado: 10-31-22
(SPOILERS) Well, I'm not sure what to say. The way this story ended has me scratching my head. The writer spent most of the story building up the main character as a competent agent/spy. Very capable and highly trained. Almost a living weapon. He's on a mission. For most of the book he remains focused on that mission and remains logical, and rational. He uses his training and experience in very competent ways to survive near death experiences one after the other. But toward the end of the story right when he is close to accomplishing his mission, this trained agent becomes a fool! It's like he turned into some high school kid who only read about being an agent but never had any training or experience in actually being an agent! He makes obvious mistake after mistake and the author gives no real reason for the errors. Largest error of all was keeping his enemy alive! For what purpose? So he can put him on report?!! WTF!! It seems to me the writer wanted to get to a certain kind of ending but didn't know how to intelligently get there. So he dumbed down his main character and had him handing his life over to his enemy. Yes enemy. Anyone who is so unapologetically committed to killing you is an enemy. It was foolish for our otherwise intelligent, experienced well trained agent not to realize that. Instead the author has the main character act as if the "enemy" was just some rogue officer who would be punished for killing a base full of Changers. (Changers are the main character's people including his ex lover who he apparently still had feelings for). How about kill the guy who is trying to kill you and your team, AND killed who knows how many of your friends/people. Then report his mass murder to the authorities once your mission is successful. Once they got to the planet where the Mind was hiding the story got stupid and more stupid (and the main character Horza got stupid and more stupid). All and all very disappointing ending to an otherwise serviceable science fiction story. I WAS enjoying it until the last almost uncomprehensible section. The final insult...the author killed off almost EVERYONE! Including the main character? For what purpose? What was the point of any of this "adventure" we just endured? Ugh!! I am usually not so critical of some one else's work product, but the way the author radically changed the character, thinking, and behavior of the main character JUST so he could have the kind of enemy, action, and ending he wanted diluted the impact of the encounter between the main character and his enemy for me. It was disingenuous. And convenient almost lazy writing. I apologize for being so harsh, but I guess until the last section I liked the story and for it to turn SO badly all at once was very jarring and as I said disappointing. If the story is a statement against war and the futility, and banality of some of the "missions" and objectives that an inane war can put people through, then I wish the author would have communicated that message without betraying his main character.

Historia
Korea was one of the last countries in Asia to be visited by Westerners, and its borders have remained largely unchanged since it was unified in the seventh century. Though it is one of the world's oldest and most ethnically homogeneous states, Korea was not born in a vacuum. Geographically isolated, the country was heavily influenced by powerful China and was often used as a bridge to the mainland by Japan. Calling themselves as "a shrimp among whales", Koreans borrowed elements of government, culture, and religion, all the while fiercely fighting to maintain independence.

Excellent brief history. Direct and to the point. I'm sure far more detail could be spoken about Korea, but this is a " brief" history.

A nice adventure set in the "other world" Richard created during The Sword of Truth series. If you combine Nicci and Kahlen into one person you get Jax! If only Richard could have done that for himself! Very nice adventure. I wish Mr. Goodkind had written another with Alexander and Jax. Oh well. Rest in Peace!

The Sorceress Nicci, the Wizard Nathan Rahl, and the young swordsman Bannon remain in the legendary city of Ildakar after a great internal revolt has freed the slaves and brought down the powerful wizards council. Now, hundreds of thousands of half-stone soldiers from the ancient past have awakened, led by one of the greatest enemy commanders in history.

Not his best
Revisado: 01-20-19
Weak Male characters, convenient plotting, and characters making foolish decisions for no good reason! Why is every male either foolish, foolhardy, or incompetent!!? Unfortunately this book suffers from the same problem most stories with strong female lead characters suffers from. Specifically, making the men/males in their lives much weaker either physically, emotionally, or psychically than they otherwise would be. Or in the case of Nathan (weaker than he had been in previous books) He's lived almost one thousand years and studied how to be a wizard that whole time and he needs Nicci to show him how to stop an opponent's heart? Even after all his training Bannon is still impulsive and barely competent? Why is he constantly getting captured? He should, by all rights, be dead already! I know he was a bad guy and certainly deserved his fate but Mirror Max/former Sovereign couldn't see that he was walking into a trap, when he knew Odessa had been hunting him for months? Is anyone really THAT arrogant and still want to live? The plotting was convenient and not as well thought out as in previous books!! I love the Nicci character so I am happy to see her in her own adventures!! But she was and is at her best when she has a strong supporting cast!! Both strong women and strong men!! Having a strong Richard and Kaylan beside her took nothing away from Nicci's strength and competence in the Sword of Truth, and Richard and Kaylan books! Why tell the angry and difficult Sliph the truth about Suluchan? What does that serve but to get tbe Sliph angry and Nicci stranded? Nicci is smart!! Very smart!! A smart woman wouldn't have done that until she no longer needed the Sliph! If at all!! She's been lying to her all along. Why the honesty right when she has to get back to do critical fighting? I think stories and characters are at their best when they are written as intelligent, relatively balanced, and competent people. Mr. Goodkind writes truly entertaining adventures and I generally like his style of writing. I feel this book was not one of his better efforts!! But I am looking forward to the next installment in the Nicci Chronicles!!
