Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

One of the best reads this decade.
Revisado: 10-13-21
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles is a great read and a journey for the mind evoking longings and one's own memories as it travels through time and history. For me, that is the hallmark of really great literature, that it touches us on a deep level even when it is a story radically different from our own lives and experiences. Yet we feel it on a human level and relate to it. It opens our eyes to new possibilities--new ways of looking at things. It can be an education--a chance to learn about places, times, history, the past (the story's and our own past as we weave the two together as we read), countries we will probably never visit but whose histories shaped the world we live in. This book is written by a man and it is about a man, so, for me, it is also a look into the psyche of the male of the species. I loved this turn of phrase from the book that stood out for me as I read:
"They spoke of the once and the was, of the wishful and the wonderful." Oh to converse with another and to use such language...to savor words, thoughts, feelings...wishful and wonderful!

This book is a good companion to the band of brothers, as I for one know that everybody in a combat situation will come away with a different version of the same story. Very good read.

In some ways it's better than Books 2&3. Nothing can beat book 1 but I am so looking forward to the next in the series.

Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

A lesson in the publishers mind
Revisado: 07-24-15
It is interesting to understand why this was initially rejected. The story has its riveting moments but doesn't quite pull it off Reese Witherspoon does a marvelous read and I am now going to read her masterpiece

Historia
Spring 1916: the horror of a stalemate on Europe's western front. France and Great Britain are on one side of the barbed wire, a fierce German army is on the other. Shaara opens the window onto the otherworldly tableau of trench warfare as seen through the eyes of a typical British soldier who experiences the bizarre and the horrible - a "Tommy" whose innocent youth is cast into the hell of a terrifying war. In the skies, meanwhile, technology has provided a devastating new tool, the "aeroplane", and with it a different kind of hero emerges: the flying ace.

I was Leary at first. How was he to cover such a big war in one book. But I couldn't put it down.
