Historia
Scholars, journalists, and politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain - "al-Andalus" - as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: It is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity", Fernández-Morera sets the record straight.

Necessary correction to the historical record.
Revisado: 09-11-21
Intriguing book with ample evidence to dispel one of the pernicious misreprentations of history that so many are taught to believe.

Historia
War and plague have left millions dead. In the midst of the carnage something awoke, and the wars all over the world stopped. Suddenly. Silently. Since then, people have been disappearing. Jake Thorne is a survivor. A nomad. A father. Hunting in forests of the land once called Australia, every day is a struggle. For food. For safety. To protect the ones he loves: his children Gus and Maisie. Death surrounds them in the lonely wilderness of a world with few humans left. The greatest threat comes in the night, glowing and artificial, in the shape of their dearest departed. It comes offering immortality. Where have all the humans gone? Doctor Marcus Hamlin knows. Can Jake protect his children from the terrifying spectre that haunts them?

Ominous, yet hopeful sci-fi
Revisado: 02-17-21
This series deserves more attention, and I'm hoping that more will discover it once it's complete. The author has put a lot of thought into projecting forward some of the political, cultural, and technological trends of our world to an unsettling end state we might well be facing. The characters are well-realized, and you can really feel for them because they might be us or our children. Yet, even in the dire future the book presents, there is subtle but heartening optimism--a candle of hope whose light is only visible in the darkness.
The narration by the author serves the text quite well and is a pleasure to listen to.

Historia
Rise of the Warrior Cop traces the arc of US law enforcement from the constables and private justice of colonial times to present-day SWAT teams and riot cops. Today relentless "war on drugs" and "war on terror" pronouncements from politicians, along with battle-clad police forces with tanks and machine guns, have dangerously blurred the distinction between cop and soldier. Balko's fascinating, frightening narrative shows how martial rhetoric and reactionary policies have put modern law enforcement on a collision course with the values of a free society.

A very thorough survey of how American policing got to where it is today. This book provided constructive criticism that doesn't come off as needlessly polemical.

Historia
In The Madness of Crowds Douglas Murray investigates the dangers of ‘woke’ culture and the rise of identity politics. In lively, razor-sharp prose he examines the most controversial issues of our moment: sexuality, gender, technology and race, with interludes on the Marxist foundations of ‘wokeness’, the impact of tech and how, in an increasingly online culture, we must relearn the ability to forgive.

For the newly skeptical about social justice
Revisado: 07-04-20
Worthwhile read if you're new to the subject matter of the cultural contagion that is social justice. Otherwise, mostly familiar points for those who are "plugged in" on such issues.
