Great performance s, half great story
Revisado: 03-22-25
I love the characters and storytelling in the Resistance parts. Wonderful voices and accents. I would enjoy it more if the romance novel sequences were cut by about 90 percent. Despite the actor’s beautiful voice, Henri comes off as a stereotype of a female fantasy of a man.

What a wonderful expansion of the Twain works! I’m also grateful for the view into the thinking of the characters. The ideas on language stereotypes are fascinating.

Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Good story, somewhat uneven
Revisado: 01-01-25
I loved the historical fiction imagination. I much preferred the sequences from Elizabethan times, always finding myself disappointed when it switched to the contemporary. Would have preferred less dwelling on the violent sex and beatings.

Celebrated singer Genevieve Dumont is both a star and a smokescreen. An unwilling darling of the Nazis, the chanteuse’s position of privilege allows her to go undetected as an ally to the resistance. When her estranged mother, Lillian de Rocheford, is captured by Nazis, Genevieve knows it won’t be long before the Gestapo succeeds in torturing information out of Lillian that will derail the upcoming allied invasion. The resistance movement is tasked with silencing her by any means necessary - including assassination.

Poor choice of accents
Revisado: 11-18-24
While the reading is very good, the decision to affect French accents when people are supposedly speaking French to each other is something I find unbearable--a carryover from B movies. The accents are pretty well executed and would have been fine in a situation where a French character is speaking English, but the setting in France with French people represented as speaking heavily accented English to each other is ludicrous and so distracting that I can't finish the book.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

This was a very compelling listen. Moehringer has beautifully written a tale which reads like good historical fiction. The first two sections seem quite balanced but the finale leaves me with the uncomfortable need to know the other side of the story.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

My first really negative review
Revisado: 03-15-20
I wanted to read this because I was under the misguided impression that it would help me to understand, from the inside, the mindset that guides a demographic to support a Donald Trump. This book gives no insight whatsoever. It’s just a boring story with a few mildly comic characters and no one to admire. Waste of time. Disappointment.

Graphic descriptions of snuff porn--not for me
Revisado: 01-17-20
This may be the first time I have quit an Audible book--I usually love them! The performances are always so fabulous that even mediocre storytelling sounds fascinating. But here I found a limit. This is a long book and I only made it halfway through because of the endless lurid details. It may be that I would do better to read a hard copy so I could skip the gross parts and enjoy the thriller. But with so many books and so little time, I'd rather cut my losses and move on.

Unfortunate use of a good accent
Revisado: 11-03-17
I'm writing this before I have finished listening because I'm not sure I can stand to finish it. I'll give it a bit more time and revise my review as necessary.
I have loved the performances on Audible since I started listening and especially look for anything set in Paris. The producer of this reading, however, has fallen into the trap of old B movies where characters who are meant to be speaking a language other than English with each other affect the accent of the language they are supposed to be speaking. While Pinchot's French accent is excellent, the silliness of two characters conversing in French-accented English is so distracting that I can't concentrate on the story they are recounting. And it begins with a seemingly endless conversation between the main character and a psychiatrist. It's like fingernails scraping a blackboard but I will try to hang in a little longer and report back if my opinion changes.

In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Not for those who enjoy an interesting story
Revisado: 05-01-17
What disappointed you about A Gentleman in Moscow?
I love large, historically-set sagas of the early 20th century. I was excited about reading a story about a character who was a poet. But this was the most boring Audible book I have ever listened to. There is no followable story as far as I can discern.
Would you ever listen to anything by Amor Towles again?
I would not listen to another book by Towles, though I might read one. It has a Prussian quality that is possibly better appreciated in an actual hard copy.
Have you listened to any of Nicholas Guy Smith’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This was the first performance by Smith that I have listened to. The performance was the only good part of the experience--it felt more like listening to a series of unrelated anecdotes than a continuous story.
What character would you cut from A Gentleman in Moscow?
I don't know that cutting characters would improve the Audible experience of this book.

Historia
When the San José mine collapsed outside of Copiapó, Chile, in August 2010, it trapped thirty-three miners beneath thousands of feet of rock for a record-breaking sixty-nine days. After the disaster, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Héctor Tobar received exclusive access to the miners and their tales, and in Deep Down Dark, he brings them to haunting, visceral life. We learn what it was like to be imprisoned inside a mountain, understand the horror of being slowly consumed by hunger, and experience the awe of working in such a place-underground passages filled with danger.

Suffering underground and above
Revisado: 01-04-15
Very personal account of the Chilean miners during their ordeal underground and also after resurfacing. Narration was very good but I have never been comfortable with the convention of speaking English with a Hispanic accent to indicate that people are speaking Spanish. This practice has been abandoned in the better films.
