Very good!
Revisado: 11-25-22
Umrigar writes characters so complex that I have a hard time identifying with any one over the other. Who is the villain? The wronged? The hero? There are no easy answers in The Story Hour. Towards the end, I would have preferred less of the character's internal dialogue. Nevertheless, themes of migration, friendship, romance and social class kept me engaged to the very end.

Historia
Kwaku Sai is dead. A renowned surgeon and failed husband, he succumbs suddenly at dawn outside the home he shares in Ghana with his second wife. The news of Kwaku's death sends a ripple around the world, bringing together the family he abandoned years before. Ghana Must Go is their story. Electric, exhilarating, beautifully crafted, Ghana Must Go follows the Sais' journey, moving with great elegance through time and place to share the truths hidden and lies told; the crimes committed in the name of love.

Do Not Rush
Revisado: 08-07-22
There are not a lot of ways I can desribe this book, except to say it is lush. The best of every aspect of storytelling is here: rich historical background, vivid scenery, full characters, and complex relationships. The writing is lyrical, yet gritty. Selassie crafted a tale that pulled me in and I suspect will never quite let me go.

Choosing Sacrifice
Revisado: 04-11-22
This is a tale of love and great sacrifice. The narrator aptly describes herself as "well-meaning" and the reader believes this, and it makes her foibles forgivable - or at least understandable. Although it is a familiar story, in that the circumstances of many of the characters are what you would expect for Blacks in the South, there are a few surprises. One, is that these circumstances were as they were in 1976. The other, I cannot tell you. It is a story of hard choices but quite charmingly told.

Historia
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy breakup from her White long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places...including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

I loved it!
Revisado: 06-16-21
Like Bridget Jones' Diary but NOT. Queenie is a young woman making her way through challenges to self esteem and identity but the novel is infused with meaningful social commentary and very accurately and hysterically nested in urban London's diversity.

Historia
From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America. Wilkerson compares this epic migration to the migrations of other peoples in history. She interviewed more than a thousand people, and gained access to new data and official records, to write this definitive and vividly dramatic account of how these American journeys unfolded, altering our cities, our country, and ourselves.

Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.
