Attention is not just receptive, but actively creative of the world we inhabit. How we attend makes all the difference to the world we experience. And nowadays in the West we generally attend in a rather unusual way: governed by the narrowly focused, target-driven left hemisphere of the brain.

Historia
Temple Grandin’s professional training as an animal scientist and her history as a person with autism have given her a perspective like that of no other expert in the field. Grandin and coauthor Catherine Johnson present their powerful theory that autistic people can often think the way animals think—putting autistic people in the perfect position to translate “animal talk.”

A mixed bag...
Revisado: 04-08-25
There is some useful information here about how to deal with farm animals. But beyond that it gets a little dicey. There's all kinds of speculation in which she says "I think" and "I guess" and "I assume" but she says the things that she says with an air of authority that's almost cocky. An example is her absolute insistence that animals think in pictures. How in the world could she know this? Animals function mostly on smell and many have very poor vision, and animals like bats function on echolocation and smell. And yet she makes these broad sweeping insistences that all animals think in pictures and perceive things just like autistic people--?! She also makes all kinds of false dichotomies, forgetting that everything is on a spectrum. Verbal people versus visual people. Autistic people versus "normal" people. People who understand animals and people who don't. (Guess which ones always do and which ones always don't.) She does a whole bit on how cows see fine detail. Specialists in animal perception say the opposite. A cow sees light, shadow and movement primarily, without much detail, and this is why they spook easily. If they had to take the time to concentrate on fine detail, their ancestors would have been eaten alive at every turn. This should be a book about how to handle farm animals on the farm. That's her specialty. But when she starts hypothesizing beyond that, she gets way out of her barnyard.

I thought this was going to be a book about animal communication and language...
Revisado: 03-20-25
These so-called animal communicators use the same mental three-card Monte techniques as the so-called communicators with the dead. Apparently, this woman has found that dogs can spell, know that shoes need to be polished, and that horses can quote Maslowvian humanistic psychology. Oh, and poodles can chat about their former lives. That's a hard one to get wrong. You can make up whatever you want about Egypt or under the sea or whatever it is that you think will most amuse and con the hapless and willfully gullable owner. I was frankly embarrassed for her for most of the book. I'm more embarrassed for the people who fall for this stuff and pay money for it. They do it for the same reason that those with dead relatives do it-- the desperate wish for a miracle and a way to know the unknowable. There's always somebody out there to sell them that. I'll give her one star for her obvious affection for animals and for keeping this nonsense short, but I frankly wish I had the 3 hours back. In my next life as a cockatoo, I'll know not to read this. Cockatoos can't read, you say? Try this book. It's especially written for bird brains.

Historia
We’ve all heard the phrase “it’s not brain surgery.” But what exactly is brain surgery? It’s a profession that is barely a hundred years old and profoundly connects two human beings, but few know how it works, or its history. In this warm, rigorous, and deeply insightful book, Dr. Theodore H. Schwartz explores what it’s like to hold the scalpel, wield the drill, extract a tumor, fix a bullet hole, and remove a blood clot—when every second can mean life or death.
