Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Revisado: 01-25-25
Martha Ballard is a real and amazing star of this story. The author’s depiction fit my idea of the story and was very believable. Listens to it twice — unusual for me !

Historia
No one remembered when he'd come to the mountains - it seemed that Preacher had always been there. He'd seen a great deal in the unmapped mountains and forests of the grand North American frontier. In fact, he'd just told a friend that he wasn't surprised by anything anymore. But Preacher hadn't seen Nova Roma yet. Suddenly, Preacher is faced with the strangest, most dangerous army the High Lonesome has ever seen. It's leader is a blood-mad fanatic right out of the ancient history books. All Preacher's got on his side are his brother mountain men.

Disappointing method of writing
Revisado: 08-17-24
It’s like this author got tired of writing the story. She built all these characters, drew you along with a strong narrative and then it fizzled. She left the main characters with no resolution. No epilogue. Nothing. I don’t get it.

No person would speak this way!
Revisado: 08-06-24
I counted 15 uses of the word enigma and enigmatic by chapter 16. It began to bother me to distraction. Repeated use of the word phenomenon and phenomena was arguably the same, tho I didn’t count its usage. Weird emphasis in phrasing without comprehension. Annoying!
Seriously, give someone a job and get rid of the computer!
