Historia
Fugitive Colors is a gripping debut novel of an artist's indomitable vengeance after World War II. Julian Klein, a young American artist, rebels against his religious upbringing and is eager for the artistic freedom of 1930s Paris. He flees Chicago only to find himself consumed by a world in which a paintbrush is far more lethal than a gun. An artist turned spy, Julian at the same time competes with jealous inferior artists who feverishly attempt to destroy those with true talent.

Excellent Narrator
Revisado: 01-12-24
This is a great story for any artist or history enthusiast. The narrator brought the book to life with a distinct voice for each of the characters. There was never any doubt about which character was speaking. I was able to visualize the story as if I was watching a movie. I was actually thinking this book could easily be adapted for film. It reminded me of seeing the movie Woman in Gold but this book is much more substantial and would be enthralling as a limited series in order to capture the full scope of the book. I gave it four stars only because I didn't fully understand why Julian would keep exposing himself to such extreme danger by following the lead of a friend even when he knew what would come of it.

Educational and Hilarious
Revisado: 05-19-22
If you are going through Outlander withdrawal, you must listen to Clanlands and the Clanlands Almanac. I'm kind of a history nerd so I love the historical facts in both books but I've never had so much fun listening to a history book before! I started listening to Clanlands when I got up in the morning just because it would put a smile on my face for the rest of the day. I didn't watch Outlander from the beginning but when I found it on Netflix I immediately fell in love and binged watched the first five seasons. Season 6 came out just as I was finishing season 5 and I can't tell you how hard it was to have to wait a whole week to see the next episode. Watching the show peaked my interest in Scottish history so I went online to find a book that would teach me more about it. The first book, Clanlands, introduced me to Men in Kilts so I got a subscription to STARZ just to watch it. I decided to watch the show before listening to any more of the book in case there were spoilers. The show is fun but listening to Clanlands is like going to the lively after party. I wasn't sure it could get any better but the Clanlands Almanac is like leaving the after party with your best friends and listening to their hilarious stories about the nights events. It is hard to know where the truth ends and the fables begin but it is so enjoyable it doesn't even matter. If I could give Graham and Sam 10 stars for their narration I would. Their adept storytelling ranges from serious and thoughtful to convivial and irreverent. Clanlands Almanac is like listening to two brothers who know each other and their audience well enough to relax and enjoy the ride, while sharing meaningful Scottish history and traditions along the way.

Looking forward to the movie with Sam Heughen
Revisado: 04-12-22
This is a delightful rom-com with serious undertones. Since I lost my husband suddenly in a car accident it was easy for me to relate. Although it's surprising that only 6 months later a new relationship begins, it is heartwarming. I downloaded the book when I saw that Sam Heughen from Outlander is playing the male lead in the upcoming movie. It was easy to envision him playing this character successfully on every level. Often rare when a book is made into a movie. I look forward to seeing it.

I loved every word of this and laying in the soundtracks was a surprising bonus. I am an avid music fan and it is always great to put the songs in context. I applaud Sheryl Crow for being courageous enough to be this vulnerable with her audience!

Historia
When bookish young American Sylvia Beach opens Shakespeare and Company on a quiet street in Paris in 1919, she has no idea that she and her new bookstore will change the course of literature itself. Shakespeare and Company is more than a bookstore and lending library: Many of the prominent writers of the Lost Generation, like Ernest Hemingway, consider it a second home.

a little much on the intimate details
Revisado: 02-07-22
As a librarian it's no surprise that I love to read anything about books and I couldn't wait to get started with this one. It was obvious how much research was done for this historical fiction novel and I often felt immersed in the period and the struggles of the time.
The personal relationship between Sylvia and Adrianne was pertinent to the story. However, I think the description of their sexual encounters was not. Did we really need a description of Adrianne spreading pudding on Sylvia's body? or that they both enjoyed having their nipples touched? This was obviously one of the fictional parts since I don't think anyone had security cameras back then. For decades these heroic women had a strong, loving and supportive bond that could be recognized by everyone around them. I believe these imagined scenes painted both women in negative ways. Early in the story, Sylvia was told to consider that Adrianne was someone who would not be easily satisfied. And almost every time Adrianne would try to discuss something Sylvia didn't want to respond to or disagreed with, she would make sexual overtures that felt more like avoidance techniques. I just think this storyline did a disservice to both women.

fun but totally unrealistic
Revisado: 09-21-21
With so much unnecessary detail, like Eleanor putting Sweet and Low in her coffee, I'm surprised that so much was left out that is a part of real life. I can understand how Eleanor enjoys living alone at this point in her life but this book makes it look so much easier than it really is. Even those who are well off need to pay bills, open mail, do their laundry, clean their house or at least hire someone to do it. None of these things are mentioned making it look like living alone is just sitting around reading books and watching TV. Maybe it's just me but I think some of these real life details would have made this more interesting.

Historia
Molly’s 70th birthday comes as something of a shock. The woman in the mirror certainly looks every day of those 70 years, but inside Molly feels she still has so much more living left to do. Widowed and living alone with her cat Crumper, Molly fears she is slipping into a cliché of old age. When Molly’s sister Nell appears on her doorstep, distraught that her husband of more than 40 years, Phil, has left her for a younger lover, the women decide to seize the day. By the morning, flights are booked, bags are packed and off they go for an adventure in Spain.

Revisado: 08-26-21
For widows like me who are getting older it is rare to find a heroine that is relatable and can make you laugh out loud. Learning to live as a single for the first time at age 60 comes with a lot of life decisions and is often one step forward and one step back and I'm glad that's included in this book. It is inspiring to think that adventure still awaits.
