Historia
The decade of the 1950s was one of the most fascinating in the history of the cinema. Regarded as "The Golden Age of Science Fiction Films," it was a genre populated by giant bugs, alien invaders, resurrected dinosaurs and outer space adventures produced during a time of drive-ins and drop-drills. Yet behind the imaginative storylines and astounding effects were often subliminal messages regarding the general paranoia affecting so much of the nation, be it atomic age anxieties, social reorder, working women, environmental concerns, and The Red Scare. In Suspending My Disbelief the author ...

If you're of the age...
Revisado: 02-22-25
I was too young to see these in the theater, but in the 1960-70s I watched Creature Features late on Friday nights on black and white, late night TV. One of my earliest memories was Earth vs Flying Saucers. The movies made a great impression to my imagination.
This book delightfully breaks down stories these films tell. I don't know how many times I've seen The Thing from Another World, but I learned a lot from this narrative. Whether the films were great, like The Thing and The Day the Earth Stood Still, or really not well made, Robot Monster, the movies are told from an objective eye.
If you were tuned into classic sci-fi back in the day, you should give this a listen.

Historia
The first major biography of one of Old Hollywood’s greatest directors. Sometime partner of the eccentric Howard Hughes, drinking buddy of William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway, an inveterate gambler and a notorious liar, Howard Hawks was the most modern of the great masters and one of the first directors to declare his independence from the major studios. He played Svengali to Lauren Bacall, Montgomery Clift, and others, but Hawks’s greatest creation may have been himself.

This is a terrific biography of Howard Hawks. The narrator is pleasant enough and I don't understand the low rating of this fine book here!. Don't be misguided by whatever the many negatives spew.

Well researched and even-handed on the topic
Revisado: 11-16-24
My knowledge on lithium-ion batteries was very uninformed until reading this book. What I feared was it could be very dry reading, not so!
Ernest Scheyder did a lot of travel and many interviews to gather facts about impacts to lives and the environment, looking at the issue from all sides. And equally impressive is that he was objective and didn't try to influence the reader pro or con to green energy.
The narrator did a fine job with a pleasant voice. This book was a great experience with a lot of information and new (to me) terminology. Definitely will read again to let more sink in.

Historia
A novelization loosely based on the 1940 film starring Bela Lugosi, the "real" story of what happened to the hapless citizens of Heathville, Illinois during those dark nights when killer bats were swooping down from the sky! Intrepid reporter Johnny Layton and his cantankerous partner "One Shot" McGuire find themselves at loggerheads as they try to solve this devilish mystery. During the course of their investigations they find love with a French maid, lazy millionaires, a gay sheriff, and the mysterious Dr. Paul Carruthers. With elements of both horror and humor, "Devil Bat Diary" is sure ...

Fun, Lively re-imagining story of The Devil Bat
Revisado: 08-12-24
Update: 10/02... After 3 times listening, Devil Bat Diary has interesting nuances each time. Good voice narration.
If you've seen The Devil Bat starring Bela Lugosi you will probably enjoy this story. I enjoyed it tremendously. It has a good amount of humor while telling this tale of horror.
The characters are well developed and quirky. The most surprising part is the Virtual Voice reader. It is the closest I've heard to a good human narrator.
I'll definitely listen to it again.

A thoroughly engaging biography of an incredible band who was so impressive they became favorably compared to the Beatles. Ironically, they were discovered by the same Fab Four’s roadie, Mal Evans, then mentored by Paul McCartney. Subsequently they were hired to session for all four Beatles members. Ultimately, they were controlled in release by the entire Apple Corps Ltd. empire. The group even started to surpass commercially the Fab Four’s solo successes with their major worldwide hits such as “Come And Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” “Baby Blue” and a ...

Such a sad history of Badfinger
Revisado: 08-10-24
I have 4 hr left in the book and it's heartbreaking. I might finish it but if you live with a melancholy mind, that may be difficult.
The band's agent, Stanley Herbert Polley (April 7, 1922 – July 20, 2009), should have been held responsible for the suicides of Pete Ham and Tom Evans. Throughout his career, Polley defrauded a number of clients and associates, most notably Badfinger.
The Virtual Voice narration isn't too bad. I wish some of my audiobooks, like Cosmos and Stan and Ollie, had that narration instead.
The information how their career started with Apple Records and the involvement with the Beatles, makes this additional insight to the Fab Four. I recommend Without You: The Tragic Story of Badfinger although it's tough on your heart. The bios of Nick Drake and Townes Van Zandt are that way too.

Historia
Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

3 hr left and I just want to start it again. So many stories, woven in and out, and the risk/tragedy of his obsession to realize a vision. His life since the end of WW2 to his latest films, give reflections of a rare observation skill, and he lets you in. He seems detached and compassionate at the same time. Highly recommended if you know some of the films and the weirdness of Klaus Kinski.

Historia
In Oscar Wars, Michael Schulman chronicles the remarkable, sprawling history of the Academy Awards and the personal dramas—some iconic, others never-before-revealed—that have played out on the stage and off camera. Unlike other books on the subject, each chapter takes a deep dive into a particular year, conflict, or even category that tells a larger story of cultural change, from Louis B. Mayer to Moonlight. Schulman examines how the red carpet runs through contested turf, and the victors aren't always as clear as the names drawn from envelopes.

The saga behind The Blues Brothers, as Daniel de Visé reveals, is epic, encompassing the colorful childhoods of Belushi and Aykroyd; the comedic revolution sparked by Harvard’s Lampoon and Chicago’s Second City; the birth and anecdote-rich, drug-filled early years of Saturday Night Live, where the Blues Brothers were born as an act amidst turmoil and rivalry; and, of course, the indelible behind-the-scenes narrative of how the film was made, scene by memorable scene.

Decades before The Daily Show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour proved there was a place on television for no-holds-barred political comedy with a decidedly antiauthoritarian point of view. In this explosive, revealing history of the show, veteran entertainment journalist David Bianculli tells the fascinating story of its three-year network run---and the cultural impact that's still being felt today.

The content of the book is really good. But why have a narrator that is sort of mealy mouthed and voice lilts to a fade at the end of some words and sentences? And the recording volume goes up and down terribly.
Very interesting book otherwise but the audio is unbearable.

Even if you think you don't know him, you know him. Few in the Hollywood orbit have had greater influence; few have experienced more humiliating failure in their lifetime. Thanks in part to the biopic directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp, and bearing his name, Ed Wood has become an icon of Americana. Perhaps the purest expression of Wood's théma - pink angora sweaters, over-the-top violence, and the fraught relationships between the sexes - can be found in his unadulterated short stories.

I guess what I like best is Wood's irrepressible optimism. But his films really help his story telling, as off beat as it may be, compared to his written stories. I wanted to like it better but it's all over the place.
