A Lot of Filler

Long passages about one horrible but basically identical Klan rally after another dulls the narrative of what could be an electrifying account. The heroine is barely mentioned until 2/3s into the story. The writing is dull and a professional reader would have made it better, too.

Not a music fan but it didn't matter

I loved this book. Friends who, like me, aren't music fans said it was worthwhile and they were right. Grohl's wonderous "I can't believe this is happening to me" perspective as he achieves stardom never gets old, and his almost childlike admiration for the musical legends who have passed through his life is truly endearing. I won't ever understand the appeal of smashing instruments on stage but the rest of it was fabulous.

Mildly disappointed

Given how many times Borowitz's fake headlines have caused me to burst out laughing, I was a little disappointed in the weak tea he served up in this book. It was more like a middle school history lesson and his narration sounded like a middle school history teacher. Not enough of the incisive wit and delicious irony I expected.

I really wanted to like this book but McConaughey's braying self-adoration wore me down. Even when he's poking fun at himself, it's still all about how incredibly cool and good looking and hot he is. His insights are insipid, aaaaand I didn't need to know about his wet dreams. Bleccch.

Wonderful!

I enjoyed listening to this so much, I did something I've never done before: I turned right around and listened to it again. The character development is wonderful, the dialogue and story are rich and occasionally hilarious, but best of all, Dominic Hoffman is hands down the best narrator I've encountered.
