Not as good as the reviews made it seem?

It was ok, not great. Honestly the title is misleading and these reviews are a little off the mark I feel. There is no Skaven horde save for a few pages of the book. The rest is about ninja Skaven who grow extremely tiresome as they take up 90% of the book doing the same thing repeatedly, making the same sounds repeatedly. The mortal protagonist is excellent though, the saving grace.

I was immediately interested in this title, having played the vampire noble faction in the Total War: Warhammer games a lot. It turned out to be far better than I ever could have expected.

Don’t be put off by all the “who are the REAL monsters?!” reviews like I was. The story is far better than that shallow reading might suggest and never actually has a moment that simple.

It’s all about the characters in this one. You will really loathe the loathsome ones (the author did such an excellent job with one in particular that I was inwardly seething and wishing for his comeuppance every second he continued to live), and will easily find investment in the plight of others.

Highly recommended. Well worth a credit.

Worth it for the elder Dark Angel characters alone

I had absolutely no interest in the Lion as a character, but now I may need to go back and read Fall of Angels after skipping it in the Horus Heresy series. The angst and melancholy present within all the “elder” Dark Angel characters after the trauma of the legion’s schism makes this book far more interesting than it would otherwise have been.

Seeing how each member of this ragged group handled that and the following centuries of their lives on the run from their modern “little brothers” really breaks the mold for the typical boring, stoic battle brother thing you usually get with Astartes.

It’s far more interesting than the Ultramarine-heavy Indomitus books for that reason, You get actual humanity and believable internalization, even from the Lion himself. I can recommend it as a decent choice if you aren’t sure about throwing down a credit for it.

I’m so glad I didn’t jump straight into the next Vaults of Terra book after I finished Carrion Throne or else I wouldn’t have accidentally found this amazing bonus follow-up to it. If you liked Carrion Throne as much as I did, you have no reason not to listen.

Excellent story, not a line wasted

I can’t believe this doesn’t have any reviews. Guess I’ll start

It does a great job of informing people like me about what a Primaris Syker goes through to become one in the most efficient and effective way possible (everything from the black ships, which I was not aware of til now, to becoming an Adept). No time is wasted getting to the heart of the story, which is a mystery set on the miserable swamp planet of Visage.

If you really enjoyed stuff like Fall of Cadia like I did, or if you’re really sick of space marine drama as I am now that the Horus Heresy is concluded, this is an excellent choice to bring you back to a grounded story with compelling characters and a well-crafted plot.

Really pulls you in with the plight of a psyker operating in an Imperium that only barely tolerates their existence despite the fact that it made them and heavily relies on them in the struggles against chaos and warp entities in general. Absolutely worth a credit.

In virtually every book relating to Magnus, the reviews are always something like “He’s so tragic.” when Magnus came off more as an unhinged, nonsensical character to me in that ge was constantly written as if he were a teenager blaming everyone else for his actions. THIS book made his story come together for me. I still feel like there’s a strange disconnect between the Magnus here (a man who finally accepts and takes responsibility for his mistakes) and the Magnus written during the Siege of Terra novels (a man who seemingly has never once accepted or taken responsibility for his mistake), but the writing for his character here made him far more relatable. You really grasp just how the Thousand came to feel so unjustly oppressed, and how the attack on Prospero was just the knife in the heart after Nikaea’s knife in the back. For sure, one of the absolute best of the Horus Heresy novels.

After hearing so much about the Council of Nikaea in other novels, this was the book in which we see it proceed, and moreover, see it from the perspective of the Thousand Sons. It’s a gripping, emotional moment that clearly sets the stage for all that follows.

I can’t say enough about this one. The Thousand Sons are written unlike any other legion, which is so welcome in this series when so many legions are just….basically stoic, battle-obsessed ultramarines or something.

Don’t skip this one!

Abaddon alone makes it an enjoyable read

The authors note in Cadia Falls mentioned this series as world-building inspiration, so I had to check it out just off of how strong that book was. This didn’t disappoint. Abaddon steals the show. His life cpost-heresy is not what one would expect, and that’s what makes it entertaining.

If you like the Abaddon you see in the Siege of Terra books, this comes off as a very natural progression.

One of the best Heresy novels I’ve read

I skipped the majority of the heresy novels after growing bored with the one-note beats of honorable battle many seemed to repeat endlessly. The First Heretic really piqued my interest in Lorgar, so different from the usual stoic masters of battle that composes a typical primarch. Betrayer is a masterwork, though, and it made me love Angron, who I til now regarded as a sort of comic character.

I had known his story already, and knew it was pretty awful for him. But this novel truly expresses how much pain Angron’s life has been (in his own words), all flowing from that singular existential wound inflicted upon him by the Emperor at the time of his discovery. Lorgar’s commitment to save his brother’s life becomes an unexpectedly emotional, even heartwarming journey at times, even as the skies rain blood.

Don’t miss this one. But you may wish to read The First Heretic first for Lorgar’s psychological context, and how he has come to see things the way he does.

The Fall of Cadia Audiolibro Por Robert Rath arte de portada

One of the fine gems in the overwhelming avalanche of 40k books

As a relative newcomer to the 40k universe, I’d heard the general gist of Cadia before, even of its final climactic encounters. But this novel lays it out in character-rich style that I was enthralled in to start-to-finish. I tend to struggle in keeping my attention to some 40k literature, which can devolve into unbearably one-note battle schlock if written without care, so I’ve become pretty picky with my choices. This one broke the mold in every respect.

So much love was obviously put into the writing of this book. It’s a pleasure to read, even down to the author’s note at the end which reveals just how much this author was committed to getting this book right.

My only criticisms would be with the narrator’s voice for Abbadon. Maybe I’ve become too acclimated to Keeble’s iron, rustic tones when he does Abbadon. This narrator makes him sound…like a demon with a too-deep, too-round voice. It was a bizarre choice, but not enough to put me off of it.

Highly, highly recommended.
