Historia
After the horrors of Istvaan V, Horus declares outright war against the Imperium. In the shadows of the Emperor's Palace, powerful figures convene. Their plan is to send a team of assassins to execute the arch-traitor Horus and end the war for the galaxy of mankind before it's even begun. Insightful
Revisado: 04-27-24
I especially liked the insights into other organizations aside from the Astartes. Starts off as a crime mystery which was also intriguing. I kept waiting and holding my breath for them to get the bad guy. Good performance. Enjoyable listen.

Good Backstory of Magnus
Revisado: 02-16-24
I started with the Horus Heresy and have been making my way through the book series. I have very little other context for 40K. I appreciated going into the background of the Thousand Sons and Magnus and find them very intriguing toeing the line with their abilities. Their story comes across a bit more contemporary, which I prefer, compared to the Dark Angels stories with the feudal knights aspect. This story also brings a little more context to the 40K universe at large, tying in bits and pieces. I'm curious to see what happens with them further into the series.

A little mysterious, interesting read
Revisado: 04-05-23
I enjoyed it overall. I particularly liked the makeup and breakdown of the Geno Chiliad and thought the characters that made them up carried some depth and charisma. Other characters seemed to be mostly fleshed out as well. Alpha Legion was a bit of a slow burn and wild card. Not sure I completely grasped the entire ending and kind of wish there was a little more to it, but otherwise good.

First half reads more like fantasy than 40K sci-fi
Revisado: 03-17-23
it's a fine book, but takes way too long giving the fantasy-vibe history and backstory of the characters before returning to the 40K feel of things. The ending felt a little abrupt and essentially demands further novels. Also wasn't a big fan of character names all sounding so similar.

Kind of intentionally annoying
Revisado: 02-16-23
Unfortunately, I found a lot of the characters unlikable, which may have been the author's intent, but nonetheless was unpleasant. I couldn't help but feel like many of the "evil" characters lacked depth and really only had two or three basic feelings or driving factors (Fulgrim being the exception). My last criticism is that at some points in the novel it seemed like the author became repetitive with phrases and descriptions, making some scenes feel extra long and wordy. The story isn't bad, just not my favorite. It completes the objective of slightly moving the heresy along.

My Intro to 40k
Revisado: 11-22-22
I'm new to the 40k universe, and it was recommended this was a good place to start. So far so good. It was a decent lead into some of the structure and philosophy, I think, of the 40k universe without being too overwhelming, using small pockets of stories, each loosely leading to the next. It was good enough for me to want to continue on to the next book. My only complaint is the volume of the recording. It sounded super low in comparison to anything else playing at the same volume. In my car, I'd have to crank the volume way up to where it would be ear shattering when I switched to music.

Doesn't fill in many gaps from Infinite
Revisado: 10-28-22
The writing and narration are good. There's just this giant blackout of story with regard to Halo Infinite, and I was hoping Rubicon would fill it in more. Instead, Rubicon feathers in some background to some of the journals found in the game. While it is nice, it still leaves me believing that Infinite is a half baked story that hasn't been thought through. I'm afraid it cheapens the whole experience. The premise of Infinite, and subsequently Rubicon, feels like they wanted to start over from scratch, so insert "magic conflict" to wipe the slate clean, and that's as far as anything got before shipping. Rubicon fills in tiny "front line" stories, while shying away from the overarching nothingness that is the current Halo franchise.

Same feel, audio is janky at times
Revisado: 05-03-22
Story flows much like the first book, and was still enjoyable to me. Continues with similar themes and the story keeps rolling along. It's a neat take on the Sword in the Stone. Wasn't the biggest fan of the audio performance/recording. There were times the audio would break abruptly and then continue, times where it sounded like the speaker turned away from the microphone and then came back, and of course the name pronunciations were all different from the first book. If you liked the first book, then this one will probably be just as good. Audio department could use some work.

A little verbose sometimes, but I love how everything ties in together: space, time, energy, religions, peoples. I think the story does a wonderful job intertwining them into each other. Good narration.
