This story didn’t end up being what I was expecting — it was so much better. It touches on social issues and beautifully portrays the power of found family.

I’m very particular when it comes to audiobooks. Even if the story is great, the performance has to draw me in or I lose interest. The narration on this one is really well done! I loved it!

Narrators voice drove me nuts

The writing was less repetitive than some of Webb’s newer works, which is interesting. The ending was frustrating and the main character had more chemistry with non-love interests than the main love interest. I enjoyed the book overall though and would recommend it if you like gothic, spooky ghost stories!
The audio narrator drove me nuts. Very monotone. Her voices for other characters were great though.

Not what you waited for

Ableist and repetitive

I really wanted to love this book. Overall it was repetitive and predictable. I kept waiting for something more to happen. I listened to the audiobook and dozed off a couple of times. I didn’t even end up rewinding because I hadn’t missed anything necessary to understand where I was in the story. Mostly I was really disappointed with how the author used facial difference/ a noticeable birthmark or port wine stain as a plot device. Nearly every mention of a character’s facial difference was rooted in ableism. This book could’ve been so good but with shallow and tired tropes, I found myself bored and uninterested.
Also, the male narrator drove me bonkers. I’m sure he has a great reading voice but the way he enunciated the last word of every sentence was maddening. Might just be a me thing though!
