Seems simplistic
Revisado: 02-18-25
This book is short so maybe that's why it doesn't seem to say much other than that you should have faith when you pray.

Some good quotations on each topic

This book seems simplistic to me. It also seems like it would be better in print so a person can take time to consider the topic and pray about it. Each topic ends with quotations from famous people. I enjoyed listening to those.

prayer and benefits of a prayer book
Revisado: 02-18-25
This seems to focus on the benefits of using a prayer book. The author has some good reasons for using one, at least as a person is learning to pray. There is one place where there were obviously some pictures during the presentation that are not described so we don't know what those are, but most of the book is easy to understand. It is short and has some good points so it is worth listening.

A good primer on prayer
Revisado: 02-18-25
The author writes from a Roman Catholic perspective, but the primer has good points for Protestants as well. The book is short and easy to follow. There are some occasional odd pronunciations and inflections because of the virtual voice, but overall, the narration is good.

Interesting stories
Revisado: 02-18-25
The stories are interesting and the narration is good. The description advertises that the stories are appropriate for grade 6. Because of some themes, they might not be good for younger children. As an adult, I enjoyed the stories. They provide various themes for discussion if used with children.

Plenty of descriptive sex scenes
Revisado: 07-10-24
The beginning of the story is interesting and has some parallels to Pride and Prejudice. About halfway through, the book begins to focus on the sex life of the 2 main characters with much description of their actions and desire for each other. I could guess at those without the descriptions and wanted to know about other parts of the story line. I got tired of skipping ahead and decided to return the book without finishing.

Longer than it needs to be
Revisado: 07-13-23
The story drags on. There is a lot of mention of the 2 main character's aversion to marriage and yet a lot of mention of their attraction to each other. The story could have been considerably shorter if we didn't have to hear about that over and over. We also had to hear a lot about how improper it was for them to spend time together unchaperoned even though the woman declared herself to be old enough to not have to be so concerned about such things.
The narrator had the characters speak in low voices a lot because of their trying to avoid being overheard, but that made it difficult to hear sometimes.

Clean romance
Revisado: 05-18-23
The story seems contrived and overly dramatic at times. Towards the end, it seemed to go on and on. I'm not an expert on Irish accents, but the narrator seems to do a good job with them.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Lots of repetition
Revisado: 02-08-22
My husband and I listened to this together. The introduction was long and repetitive. After the first 10 or 15 minutes of the first chapter, we realized that the author was saying the same thing over and over with slight variations and maybe a bit of new information occasionally. So we listened to the first 10 or 15 minutes of each chapter and then moved on to the next. We did listen to all of chapter 6 (Hunger). That chapter seemed to have more new information throughout than the other chapters. It was an interesting book, but could have been much shorter.
