Historia
Esteemed Bible scholars and teachers Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Z. Brettler take readers on a guided tour of the most popular Hebrew Bible passages quoted in the New Testament to show what the texts meant in their original contexts and then how Jews and Christians, over time, understood those same texts. By understanding the depth and variety by which these passages have been, and can be, understood, The Bible With and Without Jesus does more than enhance our religious understandings, it helps us to see the Bible as a source of inspiration for any and all listeners.

Stick Around
Revisado: 07-27-22
Interesting take from a Jewish author on Jewish scriptures. It is certainly a book written to Christians to help them see the other side, and unfortunately, the author cannot avoid some polemic. This is where there was a definite lull in the middle, but stick around for her take on Jonah as it applies to Jewish understanding and Christian understanding of Peter. There are other gems in there as well. She did avoid a translation of Melchezedek that means "My King is Zedek," and the potential YHWHism in "Salem" before Moses, but I'll give her a pass.

Difficult to follow in audio

it's a great work, but requires careful reading to follow the story. That makes it a bit unsuited for audiobook. The story is easy to zone out with.

Historia
Little is known about the Ancient Greek oral poet Homer, the supposed 8th century BC author of the world-read Iliad and his later masterpiece, The Odyssey. These classic epics provided the basis for Greek education and culture throughout the classical age and formed the backbone of humane education through the birth of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity.

Historia
This is an academic work describing how the New Testament writers re-purpose Genesis 6:1-5 in their presentation of Jesus as messiah. Though every topic addressed in Reversing Hermon can be found in scholarly academic literature, Reversing Hermon is the first book to gather this information and make it accessible to Bible students everywhere. The book also includes lengthy appendices on the ancient debate on the inspiration of the book of 1 Enoch, New Testament allusions to the book, and academic resources.

Great Explanation. Bad Narration.

The narrator sounds like an angry Rodney Dangerfield who is trying to be serious.
The content of the book is new, refreshing, and will make me think different about the book of Enoch and the fall of the watchers. It even gives good perspective on Daniel.

The Wealth and Poverty of Nations is David S. Landes' acclaimed, best-selling exploration of one of the most contentious and hotly debated questions of our time: Why do some nations achieve economic success while others remain mired in poverty? The answer, as Landes definitively illustrates, is a complex interplay of cultural mores and historical circumstance.

Historia
Are demons real? Are they red creatures with goatees holding pitchforks and sitting on people's shoulders while whispering bad things? Did a third of the angels really rebel with Satan? Are demons and "principalities and powers" just terms for the same entities, or are they different members of the kingdom of darkness? Is the world a chaotic mess because of what happened in Eden, or is there more to the story of evil? In Demons, Michael Heiser debunks popular presuppositions about the very real powers of darkness.

Lots of Background. Not much connection.
Revisado: 11-04-21
I think I expected the wrong thing, but since there is so little in the scriptures about demons specifically, he really didn't connect to the scriptures as much as I hoped he would. It got a bit difficult to keep focused.

He really makes you think simply about the deep issues in Christianity. I wish he had stayed closer to scripture than his musings. That isn't to say that his message is anti-biblical. He just doesn't refer to scripture much.

Worldview Changing
Revisado: 11-14-19
No longer do we need to set up a false dichotomy between Christianity and Science because they do not contradict. This book does not reduce Genesis to a literary reading or a figurative meaning. It teaches you to read the story through the eyes of the original audience and ignore our 21st century, materialistic viewpoint. Genesis tells us of the functional origins of the planet and where we fit into this world. It also helps one to see God in natural processes instead of removing him from every natural process that we understand.

For centuries, the story of Adam and Eve has resonated richly through the corridors of art, literature, and theology. But for most moderns, taking it at face value is incongruous. Author John Walton explores the ancient Near Eastern context of Genesis 2-3, creating space for a faithful reading of Scripture along with full engagement with science for a new way forward in the human origins debate.
