Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

Excellent book
Revisado: 04-16-25
Book explains more than just the mass suicide. It goes into Jones' history as well as the original purpose of the Peoples Temple. The reader is excellent and I gave him 5 stars even though his continual incorrect pronunciation of "Moscone" was a problem.

Cordelia knows books. An addict-turned-dealer of classic paperbacks, when she's not spending her days combing the charity shops and jumble sales of suburban London for valuable collector's items, she's pining for the woman of her dreams and nimbly avoiding her landlord's demands for rent. The most elusive prize of all, her white whale, has surfaced—a set of magnificent, vintage Sleuth Hound crime novels. Gorgeous, and as rare as they come. Just one problem. They're not for sale. Still, that won't stop a resourceful woman like Cordelia…

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
Revisado: 04-11-25
As a fan of the Vinyl Detective, I bought this by the same author. Big Mistake. Even with crossover characters, this could easily be the worst Audible book I have bought in the almost 600 books I have gotten over the years. The reader is good but she can't save the ridiculous plot and terrible characters. Even worse? The first "death" (as in the title) doesn't appear until 3/4 through the book. No mystery. No thriller. And the twist is so late that you no longer care. I had to force myself to listen (at 1.5 speed) to finish the book--a whole bunch of listening time I would like to have back.

On the surface, Richard Ainsworth has life where he wants it. Middle-aged navel gazing and Olympic levels of procrastination are exactly what rural life in France should be about. Then crisis hits his posh B&B when redoubtable housekeeper, Madame Tablier, is accused of murder. Even more surprisingly, it's the murder of a former fiancé, turned brother-in-law. None of which the stubborn old woman denies.

NOT ONE OF THE BEST
Revisado: 01-18-25
This was all over the place. The humor is still there but the plot jumps around. The end hints at a new twist in the series. I still enjoy the series and will continue to listen to the series.

disappointing
Revisado: 08-14-24
Where do I start?
The romance "issues" almost had me screaming at my radio to tell Mac to grow a spine.
The mystery was even worse. The most important clue is not dropped until chapter 50 AFTER the murderer is arrested.
The family began to annoy me with their "perfectness" early on. And the little girl's voice grated on my last nerve.
This is the 3rd one I have (audible or ebook) and my last.

DISAPPOINTING
Revisado: 04-10-24
I am a huge fan of Connelly--always pre-ordering his books and pushing aside anything else once they arrive.
It took me months to complete this one.
As always, the performances were outstanding.
However, the writing was not up to his standard.
As an attorney (and formerly both a criminal defense lawyer and a prosecutor), I am use to cutting writers slack. Connelly's books are usually pretty spot on, legally and in the courtroom.
This one had glaring errors I could not overlook.
The one dimensional characterization of the prior trial lawyer was stereotypical (as was the "win at all cost OAG lawyer). Then he throws Maggie in...why? (even ignoring the bad rulings, hearsay, improper impeachment, lack of follow up).
The end? A cliff-hanging possible epiphany? Trite.
I am sure there is a word stronger than disappointing, but it will have to do.

be forewarned
Revisado: 10-12-23
I loved the book but waited unto the second to rate because the ending, well, wasn't really an ending. Portions of the mystery were left up in the air. The 2nd book shows that this is a "continuing series" and each book is not entirely stand alone. There are still unanswered questions (though I think I have figured them out) and I am waiting for book 3.

I really wanted to like this
Revisado: 08-19-23
The book started strong. Her life story, covering trials, trailblazing, and personal foibles were fascinating.
Then the book went down hill.
Too much repetition. Too much assumptions (including what she found out but no one ever saw). Too much "as discovered by this author". I finished it half-heartedly.
Too bad.

Ann Rule was working on the biggest story of her career, tracking the trail of victims left by a brutal serial killer. Little did this future best-selling author know that the savage slayer she was hunting was the young man she counted among her closest friends. Everyone's picture of a natural winner, Ted Bundy was a bright, charming, and handsome man with a promising future as an attorney. But on January 24, 1989 Bundy was executed for the murders of three young women - and had confessed to taking the lives of at least thirty-five more women from coast to coast.

I recommend it
Revisado: 03-26-23
Not a lot new about Bundy after all these years, but a good summary and a great perspective. Should Ann Rule have recognized the signs or is it second guessing after the fact.
I have no idea why there are so many negative comments about the reader. I have listened to hundreds (if not thousands) of books since the 1970s and I enjoyed the reader's performance.

Don't talk about the law if you don't know the law
Revisado: 02-06-23
I couldn't finish because the total lack of legal knowledge by the podcast irritated me.
Indictments always have minimal information--they are simply charging instruments to put the defendant on notice of what the prosecution has to prove. If you want more info, go to Probable Cause affidavits or arrest warrants.
The hang up with 13 months until arrest? Just ask the Casey Anthony prosecution team what happens when you are rushed to arrest by public sentiment.
Who cares what the citizens think about whether there will be a conviction weeks before the trial because they "don't know all the evidence"? No kidding. Evidence is brought out in court, before a jury who will hear everything and make a decision. Justice is in a courtroom not in the media circus.
Finally, I am assuming it was hard enough to pick a jury with the information already out. Can you imagine what would happen if the AG was constantly having press conferences and telling the public the allegations outside of the courtroom?
I came to this podcast to get more background info, 2 weeks into the trial.
As a 30+ year lawyer, I am going to look elsewhere.

Early one morning in the summer of 1999, authorities in the tiny West Texas town of Tulia began a roundup of suspected drug dealers.
