Audie Award, Multi-Voiced Performance, 2016. The year is 2575, and two rival mega-corporations are at war over a planet that's little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra - who are barely even talking to each other - are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

I almost quit it several times.
Revisado: 04-17-20
This is difficult to review. I almost quit listening several times and at times continuing the listen felt like a chore. For the first 2/3 of the story, I found it very difficult to get invested into the characters and the teenage melodrama. Perhaps I was responding to the unusual format of the story, but the first 2/3 seemed like typical teenage blah, blah, blah. Fortunately, I stuck it out and the reward came in the last 1/3rd of the story. Here the characters become deeper and more interesting. I finally started to get that feeling of being carried away with the characters and their story and became emotionally invested in what happens to them. So when I finished the book, I felt as though I had finished a good book, as long as I don't think of my earlier struggles.
The performances were good, The story itself was a really good idea and refreshingly different. But I couldn't give it an overall great rating, because it was so hard to get to the best part.
This is the reason I always try to commit to finishing any book I start. You just never know what you'll find if you muddle on through.

Historia
Richard Papen had never been to New England before his 19th year. Then he arrived at Hampeden College and quickly became seduced by the sweet, dark rhythms of campus life—in particular by an elite group of five students, Greek scholars, worldly, self-assured, and at first glance, highly unapproachable. Yet as Richard was accepted and drawn into their inner circle, he learned a terrifying secret that bound them to one another...a secret about an incident in the woods in the dead of night where an ancient rite was brough to brutal life...and lead to a gruesome death.

Perhaps authors should stick to writing?
Revisado: 04-17-19
I found myself anxious to get to the end, not because I wanted to know what would happen, but because I found it difficult to listen. It's not a bad story, (although depressing), but it really screams for a professional narrator. A story being told in the first person by a male character, could greatly benefit from a male voice or a female narrator that can give that impression. Never should any voice in any audio book, unintentionally should like a raven in a cartoon, especially a crying raven. It kills the sought after effect.
The story was a little too depressing and slow for my particular taste, but I think that it was well written. However, every time I started to feel as though I was being drawn into the story, the narration would provide an unpleasant distraction. Authors should be aware that audio fans not only follow authors; we also follow narrators.
If this book were published with a professional narrator, I'm sure I would have given it a better review.

Good story, but.....
Revisado: 01-16-19
I enjoyed the story and it had well developed characters, but the narrator took away from the story for me. He's pretty monotone and tends to drone out the words. He had an unwarranted sad tone through out and lengthen the vowels. That's the drawback with audible books. the narrator has so much influence as to how much a book can be enjoyed. A really great story can be difficult to enjoy.
The story is a good one, but if there is the option to hear it with a different narrator, I would suggest doing so..

Teenagers in space?
Revisado: 01-14-19
It was a good story idea, but the characters seemed immature for their parts. The main characters kept making me think of teenagers and high school students. More hormones than brains and more emotions than sense.
The whole tragic backstory idea usually makes you feel closer and more invested in the character, but instead it made me think of her as whiny. "I'm in outer space on a special mission and the other astronauts don't like me. I just want to be loved." (That's not a quote from the book).
I think the author was going for a feeling of overcoming suppression and persecution, but it didn't take me there.
I read sci fi which usually has a little romance thrown in, but this was like a romance novel with a little sci fi thrown in.
I found myself anxious to finish it so I could go on to another book.
The narrator did a good job with the women's voices, but had this impending doom tone the whole book, even before it was impending doom. Even at the end. She was a little monotone. She seemed to struggle with the men's voices and that was a distracting.
I hate to give bad reviews when I know what it means to the author and narrator, but I use the reviews to select books, so I feel obligated and I cannot recommend this one.

So hard to finish.
Revisado: 12-02-17
My policy is to finish every book even if it's painful, because some books turn around. Sadly, this one didn't for me.The story idea is good, but the execution is lacking. Our main character can't decide if he's modern and up to date on the ways of the world or if he's been living in a bubble and totally ignorant of everything human. It doesn't work to swing from one to the other. Is he stupid or clever? The author is trying to create a character that is narcissistic and likable, but that takes a unique skill set that this author does not yet reach. The tongue in cheek humor lacks subtlety and is too blatant to work well in the story. I found it difficult to become attached to our main character or care about his problems.
The narrator had good voices and applied them well creating a vivid picture in my mind of the supporting characters, but as the main character, he sounded sleepy which did not help the problems this character already had.
Perhaps this was intended as a book for pre-teens. It that was the case, then it's probably right on the mark.

Very well done. I became so deeply involved with so many of Tchaikovsky's characters, that at some point I realized that I had no idea who I was rooting for. He moves seamlessly from altering view points, perspectives and time, never losing the reader.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Intriguing
Revisado: 10-11-16
Have you listened to any of Georgia Maguire’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narrator's voice and performance perfectly idealizes the main character and you can easily detect the change of characters without it seeming exaggerated and strained.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The last line of the story.
Any additional comments?
This is not my usual genre, but I found it to be very intriguing. Skipping back and forth between past and present doesn't always work out smoothly, but Paris does it quite nicely. The emotions were well conveyed, both by the story and the narrator, but I felt a little like the dreaded evil place should have been a little more horrific somehow. Paris left no holes or scenarios for escape unanswered or untried.
It's always a wonderful book that has an ending that satisfies and a rare book if it also reverberates in your mind long after the story is over. This one does both.
