another book on manipulation with the whole "It's for your protection" bs spin.. barely scrapes the surface on the self-analysis of why people do things but not with any good examples of how they orchestrate their manipulation

The episode was a concise overview of some of the early darkness and its most recent. I personally think covering Black Dhalia in vivid detail would have been a better follow up episode and then go to Elsa Lam but I'm personally subjective towards the Black Dhalia mystery because of how vicious and savage the murder and post mortem defilement was and the killer mocked the authorities so cleverly that dozens of people started to take credit for it and the police spent more time disproving people's claims of guilt instead of being able to prove whoever did it, and I'm sure the killer planned that to happen

There's some oddly placed prose throughout the book that interrupt the action, and I don't think the sex scenes are exploitative or overly gratuitous at all. it's more of vulnerability and realistic conversations about things that two people would say if they were alone together experiencing the unpredictable and bizarre but meaningful events that a powerful "entity" of origins that the book brilliantly tells you about in bits of satisfying amounts throughout the book, leaving you enticed by what you just learned and excited to find out more, and this is just one tiny aspect of many that make this book very easy to read over and over cause you'll put new things together each time
I loved the contrast by Lisa talking about how Code used to always say he did his best thinking while she would perform a bj on him, and, and some of her manipulations that include seduction, Lisa is a machiavellian ambitious Brazilian film prodigy that uses any and all means necessary to make it in Hollywood, but the book often mentions the words"brand new" and "cherry" and "flavor" a lot but never "brand new cherry flavor and there's a reason. it's almost like a puzzle to understand the title.
The show is great and it's a limited mini series and there's no way you could tell this book in 8 hour long episodes, so there's a whole strange world in the book

Maybe the narrator for 24 hours in Rome spoiled me

or, this narrator was dry and nasally and I incorrectly assumed it was the narrator that was fantastic and absorbing to the point where it pulls you into the descriptive, humorous, calm, and relaxing!!!! This dude does not stop at go (period) This could have easily been 2 to 3 hours longer but much more enjoyable if it was done by the formerly mentioned narrator. Also, the book is written in a much more narrative style instead of whatever style Chaucer created with Canterbury Tales, which is what 24 in Rome felt like except they weren't in a group together but you get several singular stories where some of the featured characters are in the same chapter (Hour) and it was, and still is, a great book to fall asleep too and had multiple time reading power but this one is written like it's several biographies of different people from all walks of life and the day goes by without any world building a what society did at that time of the day, not to the point Rome did but I'll listen many times to this and can hopefully not get lost in thought thinking about how annoyingly manic the narrator is

I come across books that include dialogue with philosophical or psychological conversations, the theories that get discussed can be argued with but not proven false. it's not a science with exacts which is why I love theory based academia. you don't have to agree with a theory, but if you can entertain it to the point where you understand why someone posits the theory they do, and logically break it down into and reverse engineer their theory, it's a very brilliant way to politely assert your own opinion after making theirs seem worthless

It's funny when a True Crime Podcast claims to have the admirable purpose of spreading awareness to the victims (who are dead or had their lives publicly ruined by the media) and promoting justice (the crimes covered have happened years or even decades ago)
So if the most recent episode is about Selena, which there's been several true crime books and a movie staring Jennifer Lopez about this crime, how do those two principles apply? they don't. that's why this one sucks and is a rehash of the most covered crimes in the true crime genre using Wikipedia researched information. it's opportunistic and exploitative if you're dishonest about the reason you've chosen to cover the same crimes everyone else has done but claim it's with empathy and respect to the victims. Just be honest and don't sugarcoat the truth about why you're discussing these crimes. Only a very few are honest and those are the best ones. This is not one of those

Mr. Ballen doesn't use this name to sound like some millennial influencer acting like a Andrew Tate clone. He uses it because it's his name. He simultaneously puts regular high quality content on YouTube as well
as putting out 2 podcast episodes each week. The stories are not like you find on 85% of other podcasts that are 10 minutes or less and just uninspired.
This is one of those that are easily in the 15% The stories are bizarre and weird and tragic, but the best thing about them is that they're true, and this real deal Marine knows how to tell a story and does it well. You might heard some of these, but not in the way they're told by MrBallen. One thing that makes this pod even more awesome is even the short sponsor plugs are something to look for cause he turns a simple add into a hilarious story and often cracks up laughing while trying to remain serious. The practical jokes to do to the like button are always something to look forward too. if you can make your self promotion into a constantly changing joke and make adds entertaining, then that's basically a superpower. but hey, you don't have to take my word for it....
