William E. Burgess III is a corporate security executive with over 30 years of experience spanning military, law enforcement, and corporate leadership. He holds a degree in Justice Studies specializing in Terrorism and Homeland Security. William’s career began in the military and law enforcement, where he honed expertise in crisis management, strategic planning, and leadership. Transitioning to the corporate sector, he assumed key roles at Valero Energy Corporation, advancing from Security Superintendent to Security Manager and Facility Security Officer (FSO). He directed comprehensive security operations and regulatory compliance efforts during his tenure at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery. William was instrumental in the development, execution, and training of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and led one of Southeast Texas’ largest active shooter exercises, coordinating 12 agencies and over 300 participants. Following his success at Valero, William became Security Director for Volvo Group North America, overseeing security operations across the Northeastern United States and Canada. Currently, he serves as the Senior Director of Security Operations at Tanger. In this role, he oversees physical and technical security, Corporate Security Operations Center (CSOC) operations, and executive protection for the company’s leadership. Under his guidance, Tanger has embraced cutting-edge security technologies, including artificial intelligence, drones, and robotics, to enhance safety across its properties. An accomplished speaker, William is frequently invited to share his expertise at industry conferences, addressing topics such as risk management, crisis leadership, and the evolving role of security in modern businesses. He strongly advocates continuous learning and innovation to anticipate and mitigate emerging threats.
