Vera Efron was born in the Siberian city of Novokuznetsk in the shadows of the Ural mountains in 1959. She belongs to the famous Russian publisher family Efron equivalent to the Germany Brockhous family. It is most known for the large Russian encyclopedia, 86 volumes, published between 1890-1906. Seventeen years old she followed in her parents footsteps and started studying geology in Leningrads University. In spite of the fact that Vera left the University as top in her class her dreams for a research career were smashed when she had to leave the Sovjet Union under dramatic circumstances. Her too straight critic of the Sovjet dictator regime forced her to this drastic measure. After obtaining permanent residence in Sweden in 1989 and had learnt Swedish she started the book publishers Efron & Daughter AB. After her debut book in 2001 Vera has written a further thirteen books. Six of these book are about Russia after Sovjet: “Farväl min Kursk” (Farewell my Kursk) “Kriget i Tjetjenien” (The war in Chechnya) “Spetsnaz” “Med sikte på Sverige” (Aiming at Sweden) “Baltikum nästa” (The Baltic next) “I huvudet på Putin” (Being Putin) All five books in Swedish have been preferential books at Svensk Militärhistoriskt Bibliotek (Swedish Military Library). About the War in Chechnya it said in the Military History Magazine Pennan & Svärdet: “No earlier published Chechen book has analyzed the conflict in such a credible and impartial way… This is one of the most difficult to solve conflicts of our time. Vera Efron gives the reader the essential background for understanding the war. She does not cover up Russian mistakes and blunders, but at the same time she tries to reach a deeper understanding. Why did the conflict arise? Why was Russia paralyzed in the early 1990s? How was it that Muslim extremism gained a foothold in Chechnya? And what are the real reasons that Chechnya's fight for independence has not yielded results? In the book Spetsnaz that became the first initiated description of the Russian special forces from the inside Vera has managed to get many veterans to open the vail and tell about their training and their operations in Russia, but also around the world.
