I wrote my first novel when I was nine or ten, with a pencil on notebook paper. Of course it was about horses. So it may come as no surprise that when I started writing grown-up books, they were about horses: about the Kentucky Derby in King of the Roses, a glamorous breeding farm in Blood Lies, a big-time hunter-jumper show in Three Strides Out. They were also about murder: a deadly fix, a deadly deception, a deadly plan. And they were about my years among all kinds of horses, from the hots I walked on the racetrack to the hunters I owned and trained and showed for many years. I wanted to write books about horses that reflected not just the excitement of that life but also its realities, its challenges, its struggles, its losses. As one reader wrote on Amazon, “I love horse books written by people who really know what they are writing about.” I’m also a rule breaker, and I’ve been told that one of the rules is to write only one kind of book. So I’m breaking the rules by writing other kinds of mysteries as well. My three Sarah Crockett mysteries (Book 1, Among the Bones, is out now!) reflect the kinds of stories I find moving, stories of people who seek out truths, not just about the crimes they must solve but about themselves. Sarah Crockett goes in search of her lost daughter, willing to do anything it takes to find her, and finds more than she bargained for. As a reader I love all kinds of stories, as well as dense history and nonfiction. When I think, “Why read?”, I realize that I read because reading takes me out of my own blinkered mind into the vast ways people think and live and love and die in places I’ll never get to any other way.
