I was born in a hut in the Carpathian mountains where my mother, a Wallachian princess, was taking refuge from the army of revolutionaries who had ousted her father, Simeon the Bad. By the time I was ten days old, I had been hidden in a farmhouse in the Scottish highlands. It was there, under an assumed name, that I spent my childhood.By the time I was fifteen, I had a sound grasp of ancient Greek and Latin and could converse adequately in French, Italian, Finnish and Norwegian. But my passion was for the sea. And so at the age of seventeen, eluding my guardians, I made my way to a shipyard in Aberdeen where I boarded a steamer bound for Shanghai. Once there, I kept myself alive by begging until I met up with a troop of acrobats and jugglers. Since now I was able to make some money by juggling torches on the high-wire, I worked as a circus performer for two years -- until our little traveling band of entertainers was massacred by bandits in the mountains of Mongolia. Fortunately, I had been out gathering firewood at the time. After I got back to our camp and found a scene of bloody horror, I wandered for a week until a kindly family of bedouins offered me food and the shelter of their yurt. I lived with this family for another three years, and it was during this time that I wrote my first book, entitled "My Life Among the Gobi Bedouins."
