Shane Hawk (Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma) is a history teacher by day and a horror writer by night. His writing journey began Halloween 2020 with the self-publishing of Anoka, a collection of Indigenous Horror stories released during the pandemic. Since then, his short fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies, and he has carved out a space as both a writer and anthologist in the genre. He co-edited the internationally bestselling Never Whistle at Night, which reached its tenth printing within a month of release, and is currently curating its sequel, Never Whistle at Night, Part II: Back for Blood. Hawk also co-wrote the Indigenous Horror stage play The Land Has Spoken and remains dedicated to amplifying Native voices in literature. He lives in San Diego, California, with his wife and daughter.

This list encompasses the full spectrum of what horror can be—campfire-worthy tales, stomach-churning gore, and incisive social commentary. The classics are accounted for, but it also spotlights more recent titles, because that’s the nature of the genre—it is as perennial as it is ever-evolving, conjuring whatever frights most haunt our collective consciousness. Each title does have one thing in common: It makes for devilishly good listening. So cut the lights and press play—if you dare.
