I have published ten books – novels, short stories, poetry, essays – and as of October, 2018, my eleventh will join the pack, a novel called The Lake on Fire, which considers the contrast between Gilded Age grandeur and unspeakable poverty in the Chicago of the 1890's. The Columbian Exposition plays a large part in the book -- I live just up the block from where that spectacle took place, empty now of almost all evidence of its complex beauty. I have lived in almost as many places as I have books – New York, Boston, San Francisco, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Texas and, currently, Chicago. After many years on the faculty of the University of Houston and more than a dozen summers leading the Spoleto (Italy) Writers’ Workshop, I teach now in the MFA in Writing Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I have (and have always had) one husband, two daughters, one grand-daughter, one big-voiced cat, too many books (read and unread) on my sagging shelves, and I live in what used to be (but alas, is no longer) Mr. Obama’s Neighborhood, overlooking Lake Michigan.
