I believe in the power of people and ideas. Bringing new ideas into the world is at the core of who we are and when imagination and energy are unleashed…. magic happens! I have been very lucky throughout my career to play a part in this process in such diverse areas as engineering, quality improvement, learning, knowledge and talent management, leadership, and music.
Armed with a Masters of Science degree in Electrical and Bio-Medical Engineering from the University of Michigan, I set out to research and invent new products at Motorola, Inc. After three international patents, many new products, and numerous roles in engineering management, I came to realize that I was on the wrong journey. It became clear to me that my road ahead needed to be more about working with people than with things. Through a steady stream of “Intra-preneural” moves, I helped deploy “6-Sigma” across the company, formed an internal consulting group to lead reengineering efforts, held the first “Chief Knowledge Officer” title, and progressed to the senior learning role in the Personal Communications Sector at Motorola.
Exactly one year after 9/11, I was given the opportunity to take on the role as Chief Learning Officer at the American Express Company. It was an incredible time to be in New York City and with this company. Working with a progressive HR team, we were able to pioneer many practices that are known today as “Integrated Talent Management”.
3 years later, I received an opportunity that allowed me to follow my strong desire to contribute to a “mission based” organization and that desire, coupled with the proverbial alignment of the planets, brought me to the Chief Learning Officer position at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Over the last eight years, I have been privileged to help this special organization achieve tremendous growth by implementing many innovative leadership and talent management programs and processes. Being able to apply what I had learned in the high-tech and financial services industries to the healthcare industry has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
I have always felt it was important to share what we are learning and have continually made speaking, writing and “giving back” a core part of my life. I have been a contributing author for several books including “Courageous Training: Bold Actions for Business Results” - Berrett-Koehler Publishers, and “Talent Management Strategies from Six Leading Companies” – ASTD Publishers. I was honored to be featured as the cover story for “Chief Learning Officer Magazine” and have appeared in other publications such as “Training Magazine”, “Talent Management Magazine”, “CIO Magazine”, and the “Atlanta Journal Constitution”. My new book, “Networking is Dead: Making Connections that Matter” – BenBella Publishing, co-authored with Melissa G. Wilson. In addition, I am proud to serve on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Human Resources Leadership forum and also as an expert advisor to the Human Capital Institute.
In tandem with my career in business, has also been a lifelong career in music. I cannot remember a time when making music has not been a central part of my life, beginning as a screeching violinist at age 4. As a young teen, it became clear to me that teenage girls prefer the guitar over the violin, so I bought my first Stratocaster and never looked back. It’s hard to believe that I have been performing and composing music professionally since the age of 17. One of the highlights of my music career was the recognition I received from the professional theatre community in Chicago when I was honored by a “Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination for Excellence in Sound Design”. More recently, I began combining this musical background with my work in organization improvement. This new work has centered around the development of innovative methodologies which utilize original music to help companies inspire higher levels of employee engagement, learning transfer, recruiting differentiation, and customer loyalty. It was through this journey that I met Terry Barber and Carol Chapman. Our partnership at Performance Inspired, Inc., was formed with the goal of activating the “Science of Inspiration” to help organizations elevate workplace performance and customer advocacy.
Much of my personal inspiration comes from my family. My wife, Carly, is a gifted actor, musician, and mother. Our daughters, Lawson and Erden, shine with an especially bright light and are the center of our universe.
