Julia Immonen was born and raised in Finland before moving to the UK when she was six. Julia comes from the world of media and sport and has spent the last decade campaigning to end modern slavery and human trafficking. She now works for Justice and Care amongst the world’s thinkers and leaders in the field, after a 12-year career at Sky Sports News. Justice and Care rescues victims from slavery, brings to justice the criminal networks, and sparks systemic change. Julia founded Sport for Freedom, a charity born out of her record-breaking achievement of rowing 3000 miles unaided across the Atlantic Ocean in just a 7-meter by 2-meter rowing boat from the Canaries to Barbados in 2011/12. Joined by four women, the Row for Freedom crew broke the record for the fastest women’s crossing and established a record for being the first female crew of 5 ever to row the Atlantic. Julia also became the first Finnish person to achieve the crossing. Sport for Freedom now continues to expand in using the positive power of community and sport through Justice and Care. Julia has been recognised for her anti-slavery work with several awards and was voted 12th out of Zest magazine’s Top 20 Most Inspirational Women in Sport. Julia travels around the world championing Justice and Care and raising awareness of modern slavery, and is a speaker at events including The Premier League, GSK, The Boodles, MasterCard, The Centre for Social Justice, and Council of Europe.
