John Ahrens is a genealogist turned novelist, with an interest in engaging people who have an interest in genealogy. Through his books, he hopes to entertain, but also inform and educate the readers about genealogy and DNA testing. John's novels are a fictional style he calls "geneagraphic" meaning genealogy themed written stories. John also writes non-fiction genealogy guides that often accompany his novels as sort of companion guides. These guides form a series called "Now What?" as in, I got my Ethnicity Estimate... now what? John is a self-publishing author who formed his own publishing company, Family Tree Press, LLC through which he publishes his books. He hopes this company will grow to include other authors and writers in the genealogy world, giving them a space to publish their own books. Although John does engage in traditional genealogy research and genetic research, he focuses mostly on his own family tree, leaving client research to other professionals in the field. But he does enjoy helping others learn about researching their own ancestry, hence the inspiration for his novels and guide books. John is a member of several genealogy organizations including the Association for Professional Genealogists and their New York chapter, the National Genealogical Society, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research, and the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan. John likes to travel to the places where his ancestors lived and these experiences are often reflected in his writing. When not writing or publishing, and when not doing genealogy research, John works in the non-profit industry as a program manager in energy efficiency. Additionally, John founded his own non-profit organization, World Community Development Programme, that provides assistance to community-based organizations in Africa, most specifically in Uganda, where he lived for 2 years serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer. John was born and raised in Michigan, attended Michigan State University for his undergraduate studies in Wildlife Management and Zoology. He then studied Wildlife at the University of Missouri - Columbia, African Area Studies at the University of California Los Angeles, and completed an MBA in Public Administration through the University of Phoenix. John currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with his French Bulldog, Nettie.
