Jean C. O’Connor, a high school English teacher for over thirty years, researched Congress’s Cryptographer using primary sources, including the records of Congress, letters, and documents written by James Lovell and his contemporaries. Images of James Lovell’s cipher included in the novel offer a glimpse into the world of the American Revolution, where a spy, a code, or a secret could change everything! Growing up in New England, Jean developed a fascination with the American history evident in so many landmarks there. Her enjoyment of history as well as literature led to a teaching career of thirty-seven years in Montana, particularly in Helena, the capital. As an educator, she received the NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award. A few lines in her grandmother’s journal inspired her interest in James Lovell, her five times great-grandfather and honored inductee into the National Security Agency’s 2023 Cryptologic Hall of Honor for his work during the Revolution.
