Jay Allen Vickers was born in the little town of Douglas, Georgia. He graduated from Columbia University in 2005 with a degree in philosophy and a concentration in the philosophy of religion. As a student he won an award for performance in the humanities and exempted Columbia's famously difficult writing requirement. He is currently a high school English teacher in his home town. The idea for "Stars Over Stephensville: A Myth of the Dying God," his first novel, came from the fairy tales he teaches in his Mythology and World Literature classes, and it is also a direct result of his interest in fantasy and religion. There are references to Creek folktales, notably stories of the trickster "Rabbit" who influences Br'er Rabbit and Buggs Bunny. There are also many references to Greek mythology, including the stories of Orpheus and Psyche. The "dying god" referenced in the subtitle is a common trope to many religious traditions. His writing is heavily influenced by the Southern Gothic tradition, and his goal for his writing is that it be as fun as possible to read and write. His upcoming work, "The Passion of Robert Johnson," is a nonfiction investigation into the legendary bluesman who is said to have sold his soul to the devil to learn to play the blues.
