Biography Justice Faith Ireland (Ret) Faith Ireland has led an extraordinary life. If you are hungry for more in your life, read her book. She has many suggestions for how you can overcome stereotypes and circumstances and thrive. Faith's parents grew up in the Great Depression and arrived in Seattle with little to their name. The shipyards provided work for her father until WWII brought him to the Navy. Her mother cared for Faith and her two older brothers while working nights managing a restaurant. In the 50's her mother refused to "go back to the kitchen" and became a successful realtor for 30 years. Faith learned from her mother's ambition and community leadership. Faith was told in 8th grade that she was not "college material" and should become a secretary. Faith received a BA in Political Science, an MS in Taxation and a J D in law. Faith graduated one of two women in her class in law school. She overcame prejudices against women being litigators and was a successful trial lawyer for 13 years. Faith identified as a "women's libber" and especially appreciated Gloria Steinem. In 1983 Faith was appointed as one of a few women among the approximately 170 Superior Court Judges in Washington. The Governor appointing her appreciated not only her trial experience but her community leadership. She was awarded the Chinese Man of the Year Award although neither Chinese nor male. It was in recognition of her key role in establishing the Wing Luke Museum. Faith was re-elected and served 15 years on the Superior Court. She wanted to see changes in the justice system to make it more accessible, inclusive, less expensive and faster. She worked to overcome the "old boys club" image of the court. She created programs for how to become a judge for women and for minority attorneys. In 1998 Faith was elected to the Washington Supreme Court as the third woman among the nine. By her retirement in 2005 women were the majority on the court. Since retiring from the judiciary Faith has continued to work as a mediator, arbitrator and appellate consultant. Currently she works at JAMS the largest global provider of such services. Faith is also a RESULTS coach, working with people to envision and create the life they love. The vision should include four aspects: health, relationships, vocation and freedom.
