DIXIANE HALLAJ spent eleven years in the Middle East as part of her husband's extended family, listening as they shared much of the refugee experience with her. Later, she visited refugee camps in Occupied Palestine, where she listened to the stories of many of the women. These stories formed the basis of her award-winning doctoral dissertation "Caught by Culture and Conflict." Her experiences in Palestine inspired her first two novels, BORN A REFUGEE and CHECKPOINT KALANDIA. Her food memoir, BREAKFAST IN PALESTINE, chronicles her introduction to the culture, the language, and her wonderful new family--all in the midst of a civil war complete with tanks and heavy artillery. The amazing life of her grandmother, the real Lola, inspired her third novel, IT'S JUST LOLA. The family members took on a totally fictional persona for AUNT NELLIE B. Dixiane currently lives in rural Virginia, with the memory of her husband of 55 years and their cat, named "Dog."
