Dauna Coulter, an avid runner, hiker, camper, and dog-lover, is also a seasoned professional writer who is now freelancing. She started her professional writing career as a science writer, crafting compelling science features for NASA for 8 years. She received fan mail for many of those articles -- unusual for a science writer! Here are some excerpts from the fan mail: -- It could of been just another press release but your lede sucked me right in. It read like a story. Bravo! -- How wonderful that a science writer can cross-quote both Dylan Thomas and T.S. Eliot! So much for the popular view that scientists and those steeped in science are far too narrowly focused. Thanks for an article from the edge of discovery! -- That was one of the best written stories I've ever read on the NASA site!!! -- Keep on crafting these bits of sparkles. -- You really craft a neat story! I thought this was both informative and entertaining. As her first freelance endeavor, she wrote Long Story: Coming of Age in a B-24. This touching memoir describes the rich life of her World War II veteran father, who endured 45 missions in a B-24 as a nose gunner and tail gunner. It is based on his war diaries, letters home, and all the stories he told her over the years. Dauna's idea of happy hour is sitting with her dogs next to a campfire with a cold beer in her hand. She prefers flips flops and tennis shoes to dress shoes. That’s one reason she became a freelance writer. Dauna an early riser, innovative, energetic, positive, and tenacious (okay, stubborn). She and her husband Steve were blessed with two sons, Nick and Dan. Nick, the oldest, was killed in a car wreck in 1998 at age 16. Every good thing Dauna does is in honor of him.
