That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them.

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Story
It is now thought that people who have been traumatized hold an implicit memory of traumatic events in their brains and bodies. That memory is often expressed in the symptomatology of post-traumatic stress disorder - nightmares, flashbacks, startle responses, and dissociative behaviors. In essence, the body of the traumatized individual refuses to be ignored. While reducing the chasm between scientific theory and clinical practice and bridging the gap between talk therapy and body therapy, Rothschild presents principles and non-touch techniques for giving the body its due.

One of the world's top experts on betrayal looks at why we often can't see it right in front of our faces. If the cover-up is worse than the crime, blindness to betrayal can be worse than the betrayal itself. Whether the betrayer is an unfaithful spouse, an abusive authority figure, an unfair boss, or a corrupt institution, we often refuse to see the truth in order to protect ourselves. This book explores the fascinating phenomenon of how and why we ignore or deny betrayal, and what we can gain by transforming "betrayal blindness" into insight.

Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Great info, but definitely recommend .9 speed
I got much more out of this book than I expected. I can now see the multiple ways early abuse affected my life. LOTS of good info. This book is for those a good way along the healing path; those just starting out may be overwhemed. Try slowing down to .8 or .9 speed - narrator’s voice at regular speed was a bit triggering for me.

Beware! This reading may trigger you!
Some books should never be out into an audio format. This is one of them.
While the premises are worthy, the structure of the content and the narrator's voice I'm are quite triggering. Even my husband, who is my wonderful support person felt, as he said "assaulted". The narrator talked as if she were late for a board meeting, and had a harsh staccato voice that really did feel like an assault. Given the abuse I had suffered, I found it rattling. i even slowed her speech down to .90, which was better, but not by much, and slower than that just sounded weird.
My psychiatrist had suggested reading the book, so I got it on Audible. When I told hom I was listening to it, he thought that would be too triggering.
Besides, the written material is better anyway, as I want to be able to underline important points and easily mark exercises she suggests.
I have the book now, but I'm giving myself a break. I feel like I need to recover from the audio version.
