On June 25, 2013, the US Supreme Court handed down its decision in Shelby County v. Holder, invalidating a key provision of voting rights law. The decision - the culmination of an eight-year battle over the power of Congress to regulate state conduct of elections - marked the closing of a chapter in American politics. That chapter had opened a century earlier in the case of Guinn v. United States, which ushered in national efforts to knock down racial barriers to the ballot.

Imagine living in a world where different skin colours are celebrated, where gender is not a controversy, and where disabilities are always respected. Such a world would be one that recognised 'civil rights'. Civil rights are people's rights to be equal, regardless of race, religion, gender, and disabilities. In democratic countries, civil rights are also known as "natural rights".

With the distortion of Reconstruction’s intent came a body of racial policy and a tacitly understood social code that barred the pre-war slave class from personal freedom and opportunity, at the risk of great personal violence for anyone who objected.
