Cajun Legends

Nationally acclaimed storyteller J.J. Reneaux grew up Cajun for true, surrounded by the stories, music, food, and culture of rural communities in southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana. A traditional storyteller who collects by word-of-mouth, Reneaux has developed her repertoire over years of collecting: on front porches, school playgrounds, and her beloved fishing trips, as well as at nursing homes, airports, and at neighborhood fais-dodos.

Lux and Ben receive a call from their old friend Rowan Merrick, the owner of the Witch’s Brew restaurant in New Orleans. Rowan's friend's son has disappeared, and it's suspected that he has been cursed by a Rougarou. The boy was last seen in the eerie Acadian swamps west of the city. Lux and Ben decide to bring along Chelsea, who has experience with wendigos, and Francois, thinking this small team will be sufficient for a straightforward rescue mission. However, what starts as a simple favor quickly takes a dark turn. The team soon discovers that the swamps conceal more than just murky ...

The past 60 years have shaped and reshaped the group of French-speaking Louisiana people known as the Cajuns. During this period they have become much like other Americans and yet have remained strikingly distinct. The Cajuns: Americanization of a People explores these six decades and analyzes the forces that had an impact on Louisiana's Acadiana.

Deep within the bayous and swamps of Louisiana resides a population descended from an exodus. These people, called Cajuns or Acadians, were expelled from their homelands. Persecuted and homeless, they traveled hundreds of miles south in search of a new home and ultimately settled in the Pelican State, where they made new lives for themselves free from their British conquerors. Though not always warmly welcomed, they were accepted, allowing them to practice their different culture amid their new neighbors.
