A Room with a View is a 1908 novel by English writer E. M. Forster, about a young woman in the restrained culture of Edwardian-era England. Set in Italy and England, the story is both a romance and a humorous critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. Merchant Ivory produced an award-winning film adaptation in 1985.

Lucy Honeychurch, an upper middle class girl, and her cousin, Charlotte, travel from England to Italy on vacation. While on the trip, the two women share a guest house with a man and his son George Emmerson. After switching rooms to offer the women a better view overlooking the scenic river, the Emmersons and Honeychurches get to know each other better. Mr. Emmerson suggests that Lucy and George may be a good match for each other.

When Adela is subjected to an attempted assault in one of the caves, Dr. Aziz is arrested and tried in court.

E. M. Forster’s tale of the future sounds frightening today due to its elements of prescience. Individuals live isolated lives below ground where they communicate through video conferencing and their physical and spiritual needs are met by a sinister global Machine. Things start to fall apart when it becomes virtually impossible to visit the surface world and the religion of Technopoly is re-established.

The Machine Stops is a short science fiction story. It describes a world in which almost all humans have lost the ability to live on the surface of the Earth. Each individual lives in isolation in a 'cell', with all bodily and spiritual needs met by the omnipotent, global Machine. Most humans welcome this development, as they are skeptical and fearful of first-hand experience. People forget that humans created the Machine, and treat it as a mystical entity whose needs supersede their own. The first part of the novel is set in Florence, Italy, and describes a young English woman's first visit to Florence, at a time when upper middle class English women were starting to lead independent, adventurous lives.

Howards End is the story of the liberal Schlegel sisters and their struggle to come to terms with social class and their German heritage in Edwardian England. Their lives are intertwined with those of the wealthy and pragmatic Wilcox family and their country house, Howards End, as well as the lower-middle-class Basts. When Helen Schlegel and Paul Wilcox's brief romance ends badly the Schlegels hope to never see the Wilcoxes again.

Representing every phase of E. M. Forster's career as a writer, the fourteen stories in this book span six decades–from 1903-1957 or even later. Only two were published in his lifetime. Most of the remaining stories remained unpublished because of their overtly homosexual themes; instead they were shown to an appreciative circle of friends and fellow writers, including Christopher Isherwood, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey and T. E. Lawrence.
