In A Contribution to the Psychology of Rumor, published in 1909, Carl Jung gives an example of how psychoanalysis explains the construction of rumor. He examines the dynamics of the psychology of rumor with reference to an incident in a girls’ school. The Association Method was the first of three lectures Carl Jung delivered in 1909 at the 20th anniversary celebration of the founding of Clark University. The text was originally published in 1916, in The Collected Papers on Analytical Psychology. Jung’s approach was to understand the psyche through exploring the realm of art, dreams, mythology, spirituality, and philosophy. Jung’s most prominent contributions include the concepts of the archetype, the collective unconscious, and the theory of synchronicity.

In this essay, Carl Jung discusses an aspect of the work of the Swiss psychiatrist Paul Eugen Bleuler (1857-1939). Bleuler’s clinical analysis of "Negativism" in schizophrenia raised the concepts of "ambivalency" and "ambitendency", expressing the axiom that every tendency is balanced by its opposite. Jung argues that there is no such thing as a capricious playing with contrasts, and that the theory of negativism must adapt itself to the systematic character of resistance.

In the essay, "Some General Remarks on Psychoanalysis", Carl Jung states that the practice of psychoanalysis are for those who have a special liking for this profession because of their innate and trained psychological faculties. He emphasizes that the treatment must remain confined to the hands of responsible scientific people. Jung points out that the work of the Zurich School has demonstrated the possibility of applying psychoanalysis to the domain of the mental diseases.

Jung contends that the personal unconscious consists of more or less superficial layers, but that it rests upon a deeper layer, which does not derive from personal experience; it is not a personal acquisition but an inborn quality. He calls the deeper layer the collective unconscious and explains that it is universal; it contains images and modes of behavior that are more or less similar everywhere, in all individuals. Jung describes the collective unconscious as a common psychic substrate of a suprapersonal nature which is present in every human being.
